Sometimes I read books that I really love, but that I don't feel like reviewing. Sometimes it's because I can't think of what to say, or how to explain a later book in a series without giving away spoilers. Sometimes it's because another blogger has just reviewed the same book better than I ever could. And sometimes I'm just feeling a little tired and lazy. But here are three books I read, loved and recommend.
Into the Planet: My Life as a Cave Diver by Jill Heinerth is a fascinating look into one of the world's most dangerous sports. Cave diving is something I would NEVER, EVER try myself--it's much too scary for me--but I do love reading about it. Other caving books I loved: Blind Descent and Beyond the Deep.
Null Set by S.L. Huang is the second book about Cas Russell, whose superpower is math, and who can use her genius to do just about anything, including scaling tall buildings and avoiding bullets. I didn't love this one quite as much as the first book, Zero Sum Game, but it still ended up being a 4/5 star read for me.
Wicked Conceit by Anna Lee Huber is the ninth book in the Lady Darby series. As always, this book is a good combination of historical fiction and mystery, and Kiera and Sebastian Gage continue to be favorite characters of mine. If you haven't read any books in this series yet, I recommend starting with the first one, The Anatomist's Wife.

ReplyDeleteI do a bungee jump before cave diving. Just the thought of going down into the dark, in water, in very tight spaces makes me shiver.
DeleteI would never do cave diving either, but it does sound fascinating. I'd definitely read a book about it. I'll note all your recommends. Lady Darby is such a great series, although I wanted to strangle Kiera's sister for much of the book in this installment. Thanks for the shout-out, Lark. You are so right about trying to review a book that's in a series, especially if it's like book 5 or higher. What do you say without spoiling? And then you have to try and explain the whole premise. Sometimes I feel like saying: "Love this series! Start at the beginning." Lol!:)

DeleteI'm often fascinated by things I would never do myself, so the idea of cave diving intrigues me, but doesn't entice me to give it a try. I like the idea of Null Set, but would start with the first book. :)

I'm a big fan of historical fiction and mysteries, so I'll have to check out the Lady Darby series. I started 'A Rosalind Thorne Mystery' series by Darcie Wilde earlier this year, which combines both historical fiction and mysteries as well. It's a great series so far.

DeleteNow you've given me a new topic to explore: cave diving. We really need people to pull out old secrets from those depths. National Geographic magazine often has wonderful pieces on those -- I don't know why I never thought of full books on that!

DeleteI'm with you, would never go cave diving but Into the Planet sounds so cool. And, I was just thinking about starting the next Lady Darby book but I realize I didn't have it. I'm still behind and only at book 4 but so glad to hear this is still a series you recommend!

DeleteThe Anna Lee Huber series is on my TBR list. I have the first one on my Kindle, and will get to it eventually! Right now, I'm enjoying reading my way through Jennifer Ashley's Kat Holloway series.
