Here are two more books I read and enjoyed, but that I'm not going to review. Mostly because so many people are already familiar with these books.
Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. I've read several excellent reviews of this book from several different bloggers, and all I can say is that I agree. It's a great read. My favorite part? Rocky!!! I absolutely loved that little alien sidekick. He's definitely the best part of this book. If you like science fiction and you haven't already read this book, I recommend you give it a try.
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer. I really like the way Krakauer writes, and I thought his recounting of Chris McCandless's nomadic life and subsequent death was very interesting. It's a tragic story, but one that has fascinated many people over the years. It reminded me a lot of The Cold Vanish by Jon Billman, which is one of my favorite nonfiction reads this year. Both books are worth reading.

DeleteI really liked both of these. And I totally agree with you about Rocky...and especially the way his people respected the Earthling who did so much for them.

DeleteI wasn't a fan of The Martian. I am like the only person in the country that felt that way! But I have heard great things about Hail Mary. I'll probably wait for the movie, however. LOL
ReplyDeleteI've only read one book by Krakauer, Under the Banner of Heaven, which was very good. I know I need to work in more nonfiction in to my reading and I would certainly be willing to read more from him.
I wonder if they'll do a movie of Project Hail Mary. I think it'd be hard to get Rocky just right if they do. And Krakauer is a good author; I want to read more of his books, too.
DeleteI DNF'd THE MARTIAN after only a chapter or two because I found it way too slow for me. My husband, however, loved it as well as PROJECT HAIL MARY. He loves all the space-y details that drive me crazy!
ReplyDeleteI like Krakauer's writing as well, but his subject matter doesn't always resonate with me. INTO THE WILD, for example, is super depressing. Interesting, but sad. I much preferred INTO THIN AIR.
Yeah, if you don't like a lot of science details I can see why you didn't like The Martian. I don't mind the tech as long as I also like the characters. And Into the Wild is a pretty sad book. I did read and like Into Thin Air a few years ago. It's a little sad, too.
DeleteI read and enjoyed The Martian but haven't gotten around to this one yet. Like you, I've seen lots of positive reviews of it. And I have not read Krakauer at all but he's another one that I may get to one of these days.

DeleteHi Lark, So glad you liked Into Tne Wild. I read it too. The film directed by Sean Penn is also worth checking out. I have heard that in recent years Chris McCandless' sister wrote a book about her brother that provides more insight into Chris.

DeleteHi Lark, I've heard that Weir's book is good but I haven't even read The Martian yet, although I saw the movie & enjoyed it. I'm very backward when it comes to reading contemporary fiction. I'm doing well with the non fiction side of it this year, though.

DeleteI think I might read 'Hail Mary'. I did like the author's other book, The Martian. I'm interested in the alien named Rocky. For some reason, I often find sidekicks more fun than the hero or main character.

DeleteI'm just about to finish up listening to the audiobook of Project Hail Mary, and I couldn't agree more. I'm loving it, and unless something totally unexpected happens in the last couple of hours, it's going to be one of my Best Reads this year.

ReplyDeleteInto the Wild is a very sad story. And such a waste of a life. And I think The Martian is still my favorite Andy Weir book, but Project Hail Mary was a fun read. I wonder if they'll try to make a movie of it.
