To help rescue a friend, Anna Pigeon must descend into the challenging Lechuguilla cave system located near Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico. Even though she's clautrophobic. And not a caver. But she has confidence in the group of experienced cavers she's with...until one of them dies. And Anna starts to suspect that it wasn't an accident, but murder. I have to admit, it was the cave setting that made me want to read this one, and I was not disappointed. Barr immerses the reader in the labrythine darkness of Lechuguilla Cave. And I loved it!
Blind Descent: The Quest to Discover the Deepest Place on Earth by James M. Tabor is an engrossing nonfiction story of caves and cave exploration that I also loved and recommend.
Action. Wilderness survival. Suspense. Sizzling romance.
Leo heads into the Alaskan wilderness to evacuate a man she believes to be Campbell Turner; instead, her plane gets shot down and Elias Thorne ends up rescuing her. Now they're on the run. If they want to survive, they'll have to learn to trust each other. I always love a book with a remote wilderness setting. And I loved Elias, too. He's a man keeping a dangerous secret who's lived on his own for over a decade; his struggle to open up to Leo tugged at my heart. I loved his dog, Bo, too. And Leo's a great heroine--smart, tough and resourceful. 4.5/5 stars.

DeleteI've had the first book in that Adriana Anders series (Whiteout) sitting on my shelf for so long, and just haven't got to it yet. Seeing your review of this one is a good reminder to pick it up soon. Glad you enjoyed this one so much!
ReplyDeleteWhiteout is a fun and fast-paced romantic suspense novel! And I always love that Antarctica setting. But I think I liked Uncharted even more. They're both great romantic adventures. :D
DeleteJust the idea of going into a cave creeps me out! My mind can't help but think of all the terrible what if situations.
ReplyDeleteAll that darkness...my mind would totally conjure up all kinds of scary things hiding in the shadows if I went down into a cave like Lechuguilla! That's why I prefer reading about them. ;D
Delete"Blind Descent" was the first Anna Pigeon book I read many, many years ago. The scenes of her making the descent were so realistic and claustrophobic that I had to take a break from reading from time to time.

DeleteHi Lark, Read the first book in the Anna Pigeon series years ago, Track of the Cat. I remember it being very well written and Anna Pigeon a Park Ranger/Detective I wanted to follow. Not sure why I didn't continue with the series but time for a reread.

DeleteYou are being very adventurous these days. I read a couple of Nevada Barr books years ago and remember enjoying them, but for some reason, I kind of forgot about her and went back to chasing all the bright, shiny new guys. Found some gems that way, but also a whole lotta junk.

DeleteOh, the cave setting would definitely creep me out. So dark and claustrophobic! Excellent setting for a murder mystery! I'm so thrilled you loved Uncharted! It was such wonderful fast-paced mystery/thriller. And yes, Bo the dog! Forgot about him. I need to do a re-read. I bought the audio a while back so I could. :)

DeleteI have heard Nevada Barr's books are very enjoyable but I have yet to read one. I admit I fear claustrophobia and could not go in the caves in France, ugh! It's like closed in spaces & no oxygen makes me drop. :-( So I like that the character confronts that.

DeleteI've read one book from the Anna Pigeon series and thought it was really good but it was in the middle of the series so I meant to go back to the beginning. This one sounds very atmospheric. We have some caves around here and I've been meaning to go.
