Haiku Reviews

Sense and Sensibility by Jane Austen

Two sisters deal with
heartache in different ways.
Find love in the end.

Classic .... 353 pages .... 4/5 stars.
(My 2025 Jane Austen reread to celebrate her 250th birthday this year; it's not my favorite Austen novel, but I liked it more this time around than I did the first time I read it. Though I still love the Emma Thompson movie version best.)

Fly Girl by Ann Hood

The reality and
adventure of being a
flight attendant for TWA.

Biography .... 265 pages .... 3.5/5 stars.
(Remember when flying used to be a more glamorous way of traveling? Ann Hood does in this interesting memoir.)

Star-Crossed Crush by Sarah Deeham

Hot rock star. Cute dog.
Best friend's little sister.
Secret crush. True love.

Contemporary Romance .... 335 pages .... 4.5/5 stars.
(Slowburn romance with lots of heart, humor, and only a few steamy scenes...it also has a very cute Corgi name Archie.)

Happy Reading!

  1. Sense and Sensibility is probably the Austen novel I liked least, but I do want to reread it one day. Great haikus as usual!

    1. I love behind-the-scenes books, too. Especially with jobs I'd never do myself. ;D

    1. I read it after I watched the movie, and that helped the first time through for me.

  8. I wonder if I would enjoy Sense and Sensibility the second time around. I didn't like it very much the first time. Nice reviews :)

    1. I didn't really enjoy it the first time around either. But I found more to like/appreciate in it this time...and felt it read faster.

  9. I've never read Sense & Sensibility but I have heard the movie is better than the book. I LOVE the movie with Emma Thompson! I've watched it so many times! :)

  10. I think actually that that's my problem with Sense and Sensibility, I like the film so much that every time I try to read the book it never lives up to my expectations! LOL

    1. Yes! And it didn't live up to the movie this time either for me, but I found more in it to like and it read faster this time around. And it was fun to see what the movie put in and left out.

  11. I need to reread Sense & Sensibility! (And I do love the Emma Thompson movie version too). Star-Crossed Crush sounds cute... gotta love a romance that has a corgi in it!

  12. Loved the S&S haiku. It is one of my favorite Austen novels. For some reason, it seems that I seem to be reading it during traumatic times in my life--I remember reading it in the waiting room while my mom was having surgery 20+ years ago, and it happened to be what I was reading when my dad passed away in 2011. Not that this makes me nervous to reread it--having read it literally countless times, something traumatic doesn't always happen, but reading it has soothed and calmed me when i needed it to.

    1. It's nice when you find a book that can offer that kind of comfort and escape in times of tragedy and trauma. Austen's writing is very calm and quiet and I also find her books soothing.

  13. My aunt was a flight attendant in the 1960s and her photos from the time look like magazine covers. It's amazing the standards she had to keep up with though. I'll have to pick up the book. I have read Sense and Sensibility and agree that it's not my favorite but that is a great movie. Star-Crossed Crush looks adorable. I'll have to look for it.

    1. I bet your aunt has some interesting stories from back in the day. The standards they held those first flight attendants to is pretty amazing.

  14. Yeah I need to read an Austen this year for the anniversary. And I'm curious about Fly Girl. She was an attendant before being a writer? These look good.

    1. She was a flight attendant before she published any of her books...though she was always scribbling in her notebooks.
