I love visiting cemeteries, the older the better. There's something about them that's both creepy and cool. And I like how they conjure up stories in my head, especially when they're haunted...or look like they could be. Here are some of my favorite photos of hauntingly beautiful, sometimes spooky cemeteries. I haven't seen them all in person, but I'd really like to someday!

Stull Cemetery in Kansas is one of the seven gateways to hell. Supposedly, there are hidden steps that lead to the Netherworld here. These steps are only visible during Halloween. But if you find them, don't go down. Because once you do, it's impossible to come back up.

When my friend and I were in Liverpool, she dragged me round three graveyards looking for John Lennon's mother-it was cold, wet and miserable! Turns out she was actually cremated so that was a waste of time!

DeleteCemeteries make me feel melancholy but I’d love to see Highgate one day. These all look cool.

DeleteI do like old cemeteries and reading the epitaphs. You've posted some atmospheric examples! I've never heard of Stull, but wouldn't want to find the gateways to hell. Wonder how that got started... :)

DeleteWill not go near Stull Cemetery that's for sure. Looks totally creepy! Actually I've been to two quite creepy cemeteries - on in Guanajuato, Mexico and the other on Isla de Mujeres, Mexico. I was lucky in that I talked with the groundskeepers at both places and they had some interesting local legends to tell!
ReplyDeleteLast year in Paris I visited the cemetery of Montmartre, also very beautiful! We also went to Pere Lachaise, and managed to miss Jim Morrisons grave completely. We still do not know how we managed that.

ReplyDeleteThe gateway to Hell in Kansas makes me think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and how Sunnydale was right on top of the Hellmouth!

DeleteIs the Paris cemetery where all the famous people were buried? I had a chance to visit that one once, but I chickened out. Not sure if I'll go back, they're so spooky!

DeleteI've always enjoyed visiting cemeteries. I find them soothing. As a kid, they were our playground. We'd spend hours reading the stones and walking the grounds.

DeleteDespite the morbid reason of a graveyard, I do find the old ones very beautiful, but yes, spooky! I meant to visit the Le Pere Lachaise Cemetiere on my last visit to Paris, but we just ran out of time. I've visited a few on the East Coast that were beautiful and old! Great post, Lark. :)

DeleteI can't say I have a favorite cemetery. I would love to tour an older one on the East Coast or the South. The older ones seem to hold more appeal to me.
