I love visiting cemeteries, the older the better. There's something about them that's both creepy and cool. And I like how they conjure up stories in my head, especially when they're haunted...or look like they could be. Here are some of my favorite photos of hauntingly beautiful, sometimes spooky cemeteries. I haven't seen them all in person, but I'd really like to someday!

(I've actually visited this cemetery in Paris, and I totally loved it!
It's such a great place to wander and dream.)

Stull Cemetery in Kansas is one of the seven gateways to hell. Supposedly, there are hidden steps that lead to the Netherworld here. These steps are only visible during Halloween. But if you find them, don't go down. Because once you do, it's impossible to come back up.

It seems there's more than one haunted cemetery in India. This one is in Kolkata.
It's cool, isn't it?
So where's your favorite haunted place?
Happy Halloween!
When my friend and I were in Liverpool, she dragged me round three graveyards looking for John Lennon's mother-it was cold, wet and miserable! Turns out she was actually cremated so that was a waste of time!
ReplyDeleteCemeteries in the rain are never fun. But that is a pretty funny story! ;D
DeleteCemeteries make me feel melancholy but I’d love to see Highgate one day. These all look cool.
ReplyDeleteThere are some cool-looking cemeteries in the world, but Highgate is definitely one of the most intriguing.
DeleteI'm not a cemetery or graveyard lover - however, the ones in New Orleans - yep, creepy indeed.
ReplyDeleteNew Orleans would have very creepy cemeteries. All that voodoo stuff. *shiver*
DeleteI would love to visit Highgate and Pere Lachaise. Flaybrick Cemetery looks very spooky in that picture!
ReplyDeleteI'd really love to visit Highgate, too. (And I wouldn't mind a second trip to Pere Lachaise either.)
DeleteI do like old cemeteries and reading the epitaphs. You've posted some atmospheric examples! I've never heard of Stull, but wouldn't want to find the gateways to hell. Wonder how that got started... :)
ReplyDeleteWho knows. Probably on some episode of Supernatural. ;D
DeleteOoh freaky!
ReplyDeleteStull Cemetery sounds so creepy! And wow, that piano at Highgate Cemetery is so haunting.
ReplyDeleteHighgate Cemetery is high on my list of places I want to see someday.
DeleteWill not go near Stull Cemetery that's for sure. Looks totally creepy! Actually I've been to two quite creepy cemeteries - on in Guanajuato, Mexico and the other on Isla de Mujeres, Mexico. I was lucky in that I talked with the groundskeepers at both places and they had some interesting local legends to tell!
ReplyDeleteLast year in Paris I visited the cemetery of Montmartre, also very beautiful! We also went to Pere Lachaise, and managed to miss Jim Morrisons grave completely. We still do not know how we managed that.
ReplyDeleteLove all these different cemetery's by the way!
Kind regards,
I really want to go to Montmartre the next time I'm in Paris.
DeleteWonderful list! I would love to take a tour of Highgate. I hear they are super interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe gateway to Hell in Kansas makes me think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and how Sunnydale was right on top of the Hellmouth!
It is like Buffy! I miss that show.
DeleteIs the Paris cemetery where all the famous people were buried? I had a chance to visit that one once, but I chickened out. Not sure if I'll go back, they're so spooky!
ReplyDeletePere LaChaise is where a lot of famous people are buried. And it's pretty awesome to wander around.
DeleteSpooky! I don't think I'm in for any visit although they're interesting in a way.
ReplyDeleteCemeteries not your thing? ;D
DeleteDefinitely not, but reading about them is another matter. :)
DeleteI like to read about them....and visit them. :)
DeleteI've always enjoyed visiting cemeteries. I find them soothing. As a kid, they were our playground. We'd spend hours reading the stones and walking the grounds.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only one who likes visiting cemeteries. Like you, I find them more interesting than scary.
DeleteWow! Some of those look amazing! I remember visiting cemeteries when I was in college, because I read about it in a book. I haven't done it in ages.
ReplyDeleteMy parents started me visiting cemeteries for Memorial Day when I was four or five, so I've always gone to them.
DeleteI love cemeteries! I find them peaceful, not spooky, but maybe I just haven't been to the right ones. The photos above are spooky-looking indeed!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you. Cemeteries are quiet places, not scary ones. Although some of these look a little bit spooky. But that's kind of the fun. :)
DeleteThat is SO cool! I wonder if there are any old cemeteries close to me. I'm going to have to check that out now! I've been inspired! That piano was awesome!
ReplyDeleteOld cemeteries are the best. Hope you find one or two near you. :)
DeleteDespite the morbid reason of a graveyard, I do find the old ones very beautiful, but yes, spooky! I meant to visit the Le Pere Lachaise Cemetiere on my last visit to Paris, but we just ran out of time. I've visited a few on the East Coast that were beautiful and old! Great post, Lark. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Rachel!
DeleteI can't say I have a favorite cemetery. I would love to tour an older one on the East Coast or the South. The older ones seem to hold more appeal to me.
ReplyDeleteThe older ones are definitely the coolest ones.
DeleteI love cemeteries! I wish we had some really old ones around here, but we don’t. The older ones are more interesting than the modern ones with the boring flat headstones.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
I love older cemeteries the best, too. Modern ones are pretty boring. :)
