Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly meme hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's theme:  BOOKS WITH A HIGH PAGE COUNT...or "Chunksters" as I like to call them. Here's 10 of the longest books I've read:

The Stand by Stephen King  (1472 pages)

Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand  (1168 pages)

Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell  (959 pages)

Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke  (846 pages)

Middlemarch by George Eliot  (852 pages)

The Passage by Justin Cronin  (766 pages)

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling  (759 pages)

The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand  (736 pages)

Democracy in America by Alexis de Tocqueville  (722 pages)

In the Spirit of Crazy Horse by Peter Matthiessen  (688 pages)

Whew!
These days I prefer much shorter books, but these were all good.
Happy Reading!

  2. I've read and enjoyed four of those - Gone With the Wind, Jonathan Strange, Middlemarch and Deathly Hallows - although they're not on my list this week as I decided just to include books I've reviewed.

    1. I don't think I've reviewed any of these books...though I did talk about reading Democracy in America on my blog. I read most of these pre-blog.

  3. I was surprised how many books I have in common with others this time. But it's not a huge surprise since I read so many chunky books. "Only" four that I read from your list but that is still a lot more than in normal weeks.
    Here is my list:

    1. You do read a lot of long books! You probably could have done a list of 20 or even 30! ;D

    2. Oh, definitely, even if I'd restricted myself to above a thousand pages.

    3. I'd love to see your 1000+ pages book list.

    4. I hope you do. Even though there probably won't be any books on it that I've actually read...I've read so few books over 1000 pages. ;D

    1. It really was. Though I've never read any of his other books.

  5. I don't read a lot of big books these days, but I'm surprised that I've read six of these! I read Ayn Rand long ago, I would never read her books today, lol.

    1. If I read Rand now I'd have to get a large print version...and then it would be so big I wouldn't be able to carry it around with me. ;D

  6. Gone with the Wind was super interesting.

Here is our Top Ten Tuesday.

  7. My husband talked me into reading The Stand long, long ago. He loved it so much.

  8. Ha!! We both have listed Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell by Susanna Clarke in our TTT post this week... However, I've listed it as a chunkster still want to read!

    1. It's one of those books that surprised me by how much I ended up liking it. I hope you get a chance to read it one day.

  9. I haven't read any of these but I have seen the movies for The Stand, Harry Potter and Gone With the Wind.

    1. I really liked that TV version of The Stand they did with Gary Sinise and Molly Ringwald. Haven't seen the more recent versions.

  10. I've read five of those. I have "The Stand" on my reading list but so far I've found beginning it a daunting prospect. I will get to it one of these days!

    1. Books that long are daunting! At least they are for me. Which is why I haven't read King's It yet.

  11. I read The Stand and Gone With the Wind a long time ago. Like you, these days I am more likely to dive into the shorter books.

  12. Nice list! I've read Gone with the Wind (it wasn't a favorite, tbh) and Deathly Hallows, but none of the others. One of these days, I should read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell.

  13. Middlemarch is one that I've been meaning to read for so long!!

  14. I like long novels (and have read several of yours) but I only got a third through Democracy in America. Congratulations on that!

    1. I read Democracy in America back in 2013...two pages a day. Took me most of the year, but I did it! Volume I is the most interesting; I thought the last half was a real slog.

    2. Yikes. It gets even slower?! Now I"m really impressed... ;-)

    3. I had to really push myself to finish...but I did feel a great sense of accomplishment when I was finally done. ;D

  16. I don't read a lot of chunksters, but over the years I have read a few. Gone With the Wind is on my list today. I have Harry Potter on my TBR (I've only read the first one).

    1. I love the Harry Potter series. I've read them all more than once. :D

  17. I've read 5 of these, but only The Stand popped up in my search was I was looking for my longest books! But I think different editions have different page counts, and that might account for it. Can't believe Jonathan Strange didn't come up for me when I was working on my list!

    1. Different versions of The Stand do have different page counts. I read a paperback version of it, so I went with that page count.

  18. Looks like we have read some of the same books, Lark. Though I didn't make it through Atlas Shrugged.

  19. I'm still a fan of the Harry Potter stories, despite all the conflict from the author, It was always the story for me rather than the writer.

  20. Same! I don't have the same patience for really long books now that I once did. That's been a common theme this week, so we're not alone in that.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

    1. I think when you've read as many books over the years as we have you do tend to get more impatient. I like books that read fast now. :D

  21. Great list! The Stand and The Passage are on my TBR list. I've just been a little intimidated by the page count. :D

    1. They are really long, aren't they? They're both really well written though, which helps.

  22. Wow, The Stand is a brick! It's like a whole series in one book. I like it! :)

    1. The Stand is very long. I'm not sure I would have made it through except I'd seen the TV mini series of it first...which helped me stick with it.

  23. One of the reasons I haven't read much by Stephen King or finished the Harry Potter series is because of the page counts scare me!

    1. The Harry Potter books read very fast...and they're much easier to finish than some of King's longer books. I usually stick with his shorter ones myself. ;D

  24. Yeah I think Gone With the Wind was the longest novel I ever read ... but it sure was propulsive. :-)

    2. Well, as we know, the books are usually better. As in this case. Totally worth reading it, even if you've seen the movie a hundred times.
