This week's theme for TOP TEN TUESDAY, which is a fun weekly meme hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl, is about favorite bookish memories. As a lifelong reader, I have many. So it was kind of hard to choose which ones to highlight here. But I settled on these five:

1. Having lunch with Jane Yolen! I was attending a writer's conference in Chautauqua, and she was one of the speakers, and I got to eat lunch with her the next day. She's very personable and down-to-earth, and she tells some great stories.
2. Getting to visit the bookstore Shakespeare & Company when I was in Paris years ago. It was awesome! Both because it's a great bookstore, and because it's in Paris.
3. Meeting Nobel Prize Winner Kip Thorne 3½ years ago, and getting him to sign my copy of his book, Black Holes & Time Warps. It's an incredibly interesting book, and a bookish moment I will never forget.
4. Reading Agatha Christie's Death on the Nile while I was actually in Egypt sailing down the Nile from Aswan to Luxor. It was an amazing trip, and made me love the book even more!

5. Learning to read with this old copy of Fun With Dick and Jane with my Dad the summer before I started to school. (He was a schoolteacher, so he always had the summers off.) Thanks for teaching me to read, Dad...and for so much more!!!

Oh my, the Fun with Dick and Jane brings back memories. That Shakespeare and Company bookstore is enviable...I wish I could say I've been there.

DeleteReading Death on the Nile while sailing down the Nile is a pretty incredible bookish moment. And probably not one that many people can say they've done!
ReplyDeleteIt was so cool! I kept looking out the window at the scenery passing by and having to pinch myself to make sure it was real and I wasn't dreaming. :D
DeleteI agree that reading Death on the Nile while sailing on that river is awesome! I also relate to the Dick and Jane memory - my Mom taught me before I went to school. And I've loved meeting lots of authors at conferences. Such fun! Great memories, Lark!

DeleteSuch fun memories! I passed Shakespeare & Company while in Paris last month, but there was a big line out of the front and we didn't have time to stop. Bummer. At least I walked by the outside, right?

In my life I have occasionally written to writers including a favorite writer of mine, Vivian Gornick, and Vivian and the other writers took the time to write back and it made me feel good.

DeleteThese are great memories, I have nothing that good. I did visited a Shakespeare and co book store but it was in new york and not all that dissimilar to any book stores. Perhaps if I have gone to one in Paris, it might be a slightly better experience.

DeleteI wish I would've visited The Shakespeare Bookstore when I was in Paris! Now who knows when I'll be back. Cool to read Death on the Nile while cruising down the Nile! My dad was a big part of why I love to read as well, although my mom and grandma were also avid readers too. Great bookish memories, Lark!
