Now that it's November and Thanksgiving is on the horizon, it got me thinking about holiday movies. There are an overabundance of scary and/or Halloween-oriented movies to watch in the month of October. And plenty of Christmas movies to watch in December. But what about November? What movies are there for Thanksgiving? I could only think of two: Planes, Trains and Automobiles with Steve Martin and John Candy, and the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving Special. (Because who doesn't love seeing Snoopy dishing up toast, pretzels, popcorn and jelly beans for Thanksgiving dinner?)
But there's got to be a few other Thanksgiving movies, doesn't there? Can you think of any? I was just wondering.
The only one I can think of is "Hannah and Her Sisters." As I recall it was set around Thanksgiving.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the link! I checked out their list and there were a few Thanksgiving-type movies on there, but there were also others that I wouldn't classify as a Thanksgiving movie at all. I wonder what their criteria was.

DeleteEasy to think of Christmas ones, but Thanksgiving? Does As Good As it Gets with Jack Nicholsen have a Thanksgiving scene? Love that movie. You've Got Mail is listed on Rotten Tomatoes Thanksgiving list. Love that one, too. Grumpy Old Men is also listed. You can't go wrong with Charlie Brown! :)
ReplyDeleteI love You've Got Mail, but I don't really think of it as a Thanksgiving movie. (And I do love the Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special; it's probably my favorite of the Charlie Brown specials.)
DeleteI can think of some with passing Thanksgiving scenes or old TV show specials like The Waltons, but no movies come to mind.

Yeah, not many movies seem to center around Thanksgiving. With all the family drama that happens over the holidays you'd think there'd at least be a comedy or two.
DeleteThe Big Chill has a Thanksgiving flashback, I think. Oh, and Rocky meets Adrian at a terrible Thanksgiving dinner in the original Rocky movie. That's the only two even remotely Thanksgiving movies I can remember...and I'm not even sure if they stand the test of time through today's eyeballs.

DeleteI've never really thought about Thanksgiving movies . . . My family always watched The Sound of Music around Thanksgiving, but I don't think that's really a Thanksgiving movie per say.
ReplyDeleteWell, it's a British movie and we don't celebrate American holidays in Europe. We have Harvest Festival which is similar but that's a church celebration.
DeleteWhat a great question! I can't think of Thanksgiving-based movies, but there's a fantastic Thanksgiving episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer that I try to watch when the holiday rolls around.

DeleteAll I can think of is Home for the Holidays (1995) with Jodie Foster ... but I don't think it was very good. I can't remember it well at all. Charlie Brown is probably the best.

DeleteI feel like there's a Thanksgiving rom com but I can't remember any details so I may be imaging its existence. When my son was little Charlie Brown's Thanksgiving was one of his absolute favorite movies and we watched it countless times though he called it "Dog eats popcorn" so that is what it is referred to in this house!

DeleteWe love it. It's American and international at the same time. The director has made a great Bollywood-inspired movie called Bride & Prejudice. Brilliant.
