First line: "I first noticed I was missing on a Thursday."
Title: Calling Invisible Women by Jeanne Ray
(When Clover Hobart unexpectedly becomes invisible, her husband and children don't even notice. No one does. Except the other invisible women she meets. This cleverly written novel is delightfully funny.)
First line: "Sugar Wallace did not believe in love at first sight, but her bees did, and her bees could not even tell red from green."
Title: The Wedding Bees by Sarah-Kate Lynch
(This is a superficial but sweet romance with some great secondary characters.)
First line: "I've buried nearly everyone I love."
Title: Dualed by Elsie Chapman
(In this dystopian world of genetically engineered twins, only one can live past the age of twenty; it's kill or be killed in this very dark YA novel.)
First line: "I was fifteen when I first met Sherlock Holmes, fifteen years old with my nose in a book as I walked the Sussex Downs, and nearly stepped on him."
Title: The Beekeeper's Apprentice by Laurie R. King
(I know I'm late to the party, but I finally read this fun Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell mystery. It's as good as everyone says it is. I can't wait to read the rest of this series.)
I love Jeanne Ray's books! That first line certainly made me want to read more. And the same with The Beekeeper's Apprentice. I just picked up the latest in the series last Saturday - I'm looking forward to catching up with Mary & Sherlock. And you have lots of fun books ahead of you :)
ReplyDeleteAlways a good thing, right? :) Hope you enjoy King's latest!
DeleteI've read the first two Mary Russell books and enjoyed them both. I must continue with the series soon! The Jeanne Ray book sounds very intriguing - that's a great first line and definitely makes me want to read more!
ReplyDeleteIt's a fun book...a little quirky and definitely unique.
DeleteA good first sentence can make me buy a book or leave it at the bookstore. I love the first line from The wedding bees, but I like bees.
ReplyDeleteKind regards,
It's that first line that made me want to read the book. And it was a fun, light-hearted romance.
DeleteWhat great first lines! I am intrigued by the first one especially. Another book for my overly long list.
ReplyDelete(My list is overly long, too.)
DeleteThe Beekeeper's Apprentice is one of my favorite books, and that's one of my all-time favorite first lines. But the Invisible Women book looks interesting and fun, too!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great first line. I can't wait to read the other books in the series. And Invisible Women was a quick and funny read. It made me laugh.

ReplyDeleteOooo ooooo oooooooo! So excited you're reading the Mary Russell series. I wish I could read them all for the first time again.
I'm only sad that I waited as long as I did to start them...but now I have something to look forward to. I love King's depictions of Holmes, and of course, Mary Russell is a great character! Which one is your favorite?
