This week's theme: The First 10 Books I Randomly Grabbed From My Shelves.
I wanted to make this list truly random, so I numbered the shelves in my bedroom and pulled out my 12-sided and 20-sided dice...then rolled for what shelf and what book. (Yes, I own a set of Dungeons and Dragons dice; I'm more than just a book nerd. 🐉 ) Anyway, here are 10 Random Books from my Shelves.
The Rose Revived by Katie Fforde
(I love Fforde's romances and own several of them, but this was the first one I ever read.)
Cakes and Ale by W. Somerset Maugham
(He's one of my favorite classic authors...and this is my second favorite book by him.)
Nightlife by Rob Thurman
(This is the compelling first book in a very action-packed urban fantasy series that I love with brothers Cal and Nikos Leandros.)
Maiden Voyage by Tania Aebi
(This is a fantastic nonfiction read about a girl who sails around the world alone.
I love travel memoirs and have read this one many times.)
The Man Who Listens to Horses by Monty Roberts
(This is another excellent nonfiction book...and one I actually bought in hardback when it came out.)
The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
(Another favorite classic novel! I love the way this mystery unfolds.)
The Day of the Storm by Rosamunde Pilcher
(Pilcher's romances are so magical; I especially love this one.)
Well Met by Jen DeLuca
(Who doesn't love a sweet and swoony romance set at a Renaissance Faire?)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
(This was my introduction to Scandinavian thrillers and I loved it!)
The Club Dumas by Arturo Perez-Reverte
(His books are amazing!)
Though randomly chosen, these 10 books are a good representation of the kinds of books I love to read: thrillers, romances, urban fantasy, classics, mystery, and nonfiction.

Oho... there's a book about Dumas' manuscript? The title reminds me of Dante Club, also a murder-thriller around Dante's translation project. It's always exciting to find modern books about classics.
ReplyDeleteIt's been ages since I last read Maugham (Of Human Bondage). Cakes and Ale is the next in my list.
I think I read the Dante Club. By Matthew Pearl? I liked that one, too. And I hope you get a chance to read Cakes and Ale. It's one of Maugham's lighter novels.
DeleteWow, I like that - using dice to select the books! I've loved Woman in White too and Somerset Maugham's short stories (never read one of this novels though). I've never read Pilcher before, should fix that.

The Woman in White is one of my favorite books. I love the way it's told, and the characters. It's a great classic.
DeleteI loved The Dragon Tattoo series! Well, the original trilogy. I also have Well Met on my shelf and haven't read it yet.

DeleteI'm not familiar with most of these writers but you've mentioned two of my personal favorites - the Larsson book and the classic from Collins.

ReplyDeleteNightlife looks good to me- a few years back when I was trying to read more urban fantasy I remember looking at that series.
I think you would like Nightlife a lot. The brothers in it are such great characters! And what would we do without 20-sided dice? ;D
DeleteI read The Club Dumas as was disappointed with it!! I had such high hopes it would be a great read. I was lucky enough to met Arturo Perez-Reverte in 2016 at a book signing abd have a signed copy of 'What We Become'.

DeleteI used a random number generator if it helps you feel a little less nerdy! I own that Rosamunde Pilcher but am not sure if I've read it. Now I need to go look at my shelves again! Good mix of books.

DeleteI couldn't figure out how to make this truly random because even with my eyes closed, I know where my books are on my shelves. I love this dice idea! So clever!
ReplyDeleteThat was my problem, too. And on some of my shelves I have the books double-stacked, which complicates the issue of closing your eyes and pointing. Rolling dice was the only thing that made sense. :D

DeleteI have only read a few of these authors, but there are several thtat sound appealing. I have read The Day of the Storm, but I guess it wasn't one of my favorite Rosamund Pilcher novels because I don't think I kept a copy on my shelves. I love some of her other books, though! And Jen De Luca's Well Met was a lot of fun; I plan to read the rest of the series.
