Top Ten Tuesday

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly meme hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.

This week's theme:  BOOKISH GOALS FOR 2025.

I haven't actually set many bookish goals this year, at least not any real specific ones. I know I want to read more fantasy this year, and catch up on some series. I also want to allow room in my reading for bookish serendipity...and for rereading when the mood strikes. And I should probably limit the number of Goodreads Giveaways I enter because I think that's what's helped make my Want to Read list sooo long. But those are more thoughts than actual goals.

I do however have one specific bookish goal:  Read More Nonfiction. I even have a list of the 12 nonfiction books I intend to read this year. Here they are:

The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan

Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder by Salman Rushdie

The Third Gilmore Girl by Kelly Bishop

Patton's Prayer: A True Story of Courage, Faith and Victory in World War II by Alex Kershaw

The Cave: A Secret Underground Hospital and One Woman's Story of Survival in Syria by Amani Ballour, M.D.

Clay and Bones: My Life as an FBI Forensic Artist by Lisa Bailey

The Paranormal Ranger: A Navajo Investigator's Search for the Unexplained by Stanley Milford, Jr.

Lay Them to Rest: On the Road With the Cold Case Investigators Who Identify the Nameless by Laurah Norton

Being Henry: The Fonz...and Beyond by Henry Winkler

Twisting in Air: The Sensational Rise of a Hollywood Falling Horse by Carol Bradley

Ghosts of Honolulu: A Japanese Spy, A Japanese American Spy, A Hunter, and the Untold Story of Pearl Harbor by Mark Harmon and Leon Carroll Jr.

Ghost Town Living: Mining for Purpose and Chasing Dreams at the Edge of Death Valley by Brent Underwood

And I also have an alternate if one of the above turns out to be a DNF. (It's been on my TBR list for awhile, and it's one I do want to read.)  The Dark Queens: The Bloody Rivalry that Forged the Medieval World by Shelley Puhak.

Good luck with ALL of your bookish goals this year!
And Happy Reading.

  1. Good luck with your goals, Lark! I am not much of a non-fiction reader, but occasionally pick one up. Hope you have fun with your non-fic list.

    1. I really enjoy reading nonfiction, but they tend to get lost in the long list of fiction titles on my TBR list, so if I don't prioritize them at the beginning of the year I end up not reading any of them.

  2. I like this so much. Good luck.

  4. I haven't heard of these, but I also don't read very much nonfiction. Maybe two or three books a year? I know I should probably challenge myself to read more than that. I hope these are wonderful for you!

  5. I'm hoping to read more nonfiction this year too, but I probably won't manage to read 12. I read The Dark Queens a few years ago and really enjoyed it.

  6. I don't read much nonfiction. The only one on your list that I have read is "The Backyard Bird Chronicles" which was terrific. I read it many years ago. Maybe I should read it again...

    1. Adding to your TBR list is the hazard of book blogging. ;D Thanks for commenting!

  9. I have this as a goal too! I think the key is to really narrow down what topics interest you, but the fact that you already have a list is wonderful! Good luck with your goals!

  13. Good luck with your book goals Lark. I have the classics challenge as a goal but I also want to add on one or two more book goals and read some non fiction and Ghost Town Lving sounds interesting. Also the Kelly Bishop memoir is getting alot of buzz

  14. Good luck, Lark! I don't read a lot of non-fiction, but I want to read more. I just tend to gravitate more towards fiction for some reason. :)

    1. I tend to gravitate to fiction, too, which is why I have to be intentional about choosing the nonfiction books I want to read each year...and then scheduling them out. Or I'd never get around to reading any of them. ;D

  15. I hope the books are good when you read them.

  16. The Backyard Bird Chronicles and Clay and Bones: My Life as an FBI Forensic Artist sound interesting. I'd be happy if I read one non-fiction book this year! I haven't read any in sooo long! Good luck with your challenge, Lark! :)

  17. Reading nonfiction can be so rewarding and you have some great titles. Backyard Bird Chronicles is a lovely book--almost meditative.

I'm on the library waitlist for the audio of The Third Gilmore Girl--still months ago but I am so excited to read this. Love Kelly Bishop!

Clay and Bones sounds super interesting. I may have to look into that one myself.

Happy reading, and stay warm--Utah is probably going to get the same Arctic cold front that is hitting CO on Friday.

    1. I'm not looking forward to that wave of Arctic cold air! It makes it even harder to get up in the mornings. ;D And I'm looking forward to reading both Backyard Bird Chronicles and The Third Gilmore Girl. :D

  18. Good nonfiction list. I too want to boost my nonfiction this year -- though fiction is my favorite. I got a copy of the Amy Tan bird book too! Looks good. Happy reading.

  19. Every year, I say I need to read more non-fiction, but I rarely actually do it. Hopefully, I'll do better this year. GHOST TOWN LIVING and CLAY AND BONES both look like great reads. I'll have to check those out.

    Happy TTT (on a Wednesday)!

    1. That's why I have to make a plan in January about which nonfiction books I want to read and when, otherwise I won't end up reading any of them!

  20. I think I read 8 non-fiction books last year when I wanted to read one a month, but hey, I read none in 2023. I read The Third Gilmore Girl and really enjoyed it. Hope you do too. I also found a few titles here that interested me.

    1. That's what I tried to do last year, too...read one nonfiction book a month. And I wasn't perfect at it, but I did read 10. This year I'm hoping to actually read all 12. Wish me luck.

  21. Your non-fiction books all sound amazing! I rarely pick up non-fiction, but when I do, it's typically memoirs -- so of your list, the Kelly Bishop and Henry Winkler books are the ones I'd be most likely to try! Can't wait to hear how you like them!

    1. I'm excited to read both of those books! I'll probably read them first. ;D

  22. Reading more nonfiction is on my list as well! I own several that I really want to make time for this year. Good luck with these!

  23. Your non-fiction list is one that I could happily read, Lark. (Well, I have read one of them already!) Ghost Town Living intrigues me the most because Denis and I spent a lot of time out on trails locating ghost towns throughout Arizona, and I'm familiar with the Death Valley area.

  24. I am hoping to read more nonfiction this year as well. The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan is one of the books on my list that we share. :-) Good luck with your goals, Lark!

  25. I enjoy nonfiction but it's so easy to not read any. I have The Backyard Bird Chronicles pretty high up on my list. It sounds fantastic. I'm adding a few of these to my TBR - especially Clay Bones. It's a great list! I can't wait to see what you read.

    1. I hope I can manage to read them all, but it's hard to make room for nonfiction reads when there are so many fiction books on my To Read list. If only I had more time. ;D

  26. Great list, Lark! I read Henry Winkler's book, and it was very good. I hope you enjoy it and these other books when you get the chance to read them. Happy Tuesday!
