A few bookish myths...

Myth #1:  You must finish every book you start. (I have less patience these days for the predictable or the poorly-written; I say if a book is stupid, or you're not enjoying it, stop reading immediately!)

Myth #2:  All classics are must-reads.  (Frankly, some aren't worth your time. Just because a book has been labeled a "classic" doesn't necessarily mean it's worth reading.)

Myth #3:  If it's a best-seller it must be good!  (Substitute best-seller for 'classic' and see above.)

Myth #4:  "Reading is boring."  (So obviously untrue it doesn't deserve further comment.)

Myth #5:  No one wants to be labeled a "bookworm".  (Except for me and all my bookish friends.)

Happy Reading!

  1. :) I agree with all of these, and I never had any problem with being labeled a bookworm.

  2. I had some experience with #2 last year, which led me to #1 - off they went, unfinished, to the library sale. And a friend mentioned that I hardly ever read "new" books - I was trying to explain that some of the most hyped ones are the most disappointing, but he didn't believe me. And blogging has been the perfect way to meet other bookworms :)

    1. I agree. It's nice to be in the company of fellow bookworms...some of whom even read more than me. ;-) After all, bookworms have to stick together!
(And good for you for not finishing books you don't like!)

  3. I like these!
I have learned over the years not do do #1 anymore, when I do not like a book, I will not continue it.

Bookworm is a badge of honour, as far as I am concerned! :-)

    Kind regards,

    1. I know people who seem determined to finish every book they start...even when they aren't enjoying it. Why? Life is too short to waste time on stupid books. :) And I'm proud to be a bookworm, too.

  4. Congrats on exposing the myths. I agree, some books are definitely not worth finishing. And people who believe Myth #4 have sadly not yet found the book that keeps them up reading all night long! I would rather be a bookworm than a lot of other things :)

  5. Who doesn't want to be labeled as a bookworm? Weirdos. :)

  6. I must admit I started Robinson's novel The Gilead recently and I set it aside after 20 or so pages. I felt bad about it but there's too much to read to be bored stiff. So #1 above is one rule I've had to learn. Cheers. http://www.thecuecard.com

  7. Yes! Thank you for putting #1 up there. I have been trumpeting that for years and still can't imagine why so many people feel obliged to finish a book once they've started reading. Ditto "classics." People should feel free to read what they like because life is too short to do otherwise.

  8. I think that anyone who chooses not to read is myth-ing out, TBH. :-)
