You know that saying, "The best laid plans of mice and men oft go astray?" Well, that's been my week. I blame it on Jane Austen...and the two library books I DNF'd. See, I was supposed to be able to write a review on one of those two books, but I wasn't enjoying them so I quit after only a few chapters. And then, before I could start a new book, I made the mistake of watching Persuasion. The version that stars Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root. Which made me really want to reread the book. So I am. Only I haven't finished it yet; I'm just halfway through...happily ensconced at Lyme with Anne, Capt. Wentworth, and the two Miss Musgroves. Which leaves me without a review to post today. But I'll have one next week. Sometime. I promise.On a side note, have you seen the previews for the new movie supposedly based on Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time? Because from the previews I've seen it doesn't look anything like the book I read and loved as a child. Trust Hollywood to try to "improve" a classic. They're doing it to Peter Rabbit, too. Those previews look even worse! I think I'll stick with the books.

ReplyDeleteI'm not usually a fan of film versions, but I do like Ciaran Hinds and Amanda Root - actually, the whole cast is wonderful. And the scenery, and the costumes!

ReplyDeleteYou're more optimistic than me. Some of the scenes I've seen did not look anything like the book I've read and loved since I was in 5th grade. But I hope you're right. :)

DeleteI saw the film Persuasion and the highlight of the movie in my opinion is the letter Capt Wentworth writes to Anne. Its such a powerful love letter all the more suprising because up until that moment we think he has forgotten Anne, doesn't feel about her the way he once did.
ReplyDeleteIt is a great letter, isn't it? But then Jane Austen had a real knack for writing amazingly memorable letters.

DeleteIf you are going to go astray reading wise, reading Jane Austen is the best detour to take. :-) I saw the Peter Rabbit trailer. Ugh. I actually don't mind the trailer for A Wrinkle in Time. I'm reserving judgement until I've seen the movie.

I really do hope that this movie of A Wrinkle in Time isn't awful...it's just, I love the book so much I'm afraid the movie isn't going to do it justice. Especially with Oprah playing one of the 3 Mrs. W's.
DeleteOK, I've to admit I haven't read A Wrinkle in Time and I'm curious of the movie version. Many times I've been disappointed by the film adaptions so perhaps that's why I always feel nervous when my favourite books are being made into movies. That said, some were done nicely so I can't say I hate them all. ;)

DeleteActually dumping books that aren't working for you and turning to a known-favorite sounds wonderful! I have only re-read Pride and Prejudice, which is probably my favorite next to Emma.
ReplyDeleteThe movie version of A Wrinkle in Time is bound to disappoint some. But let me just state that I really loved movies The Neverending Story and Dune back in the day and liked them so much I then turned to the books and read them too. SO even an unfaithful or weak adaptation can lead the viewer to the source material and all the joy than brings the reader!
That is a very good point! Any movie that makes more kids want to read a book as wonderful as A Wrinkle in Time can't be all bad. :)
DeleteGah! I hate it when Hollywood messes with favorite books. It doesn't ALWAYS destroy them but it so often does that I'm ALWAYS leery. I'm with you -- I'll stick with the book, thank you very much!

DeleteThat version of Persuasion is my favorite Austen adaptation -- love the casting, setting, script. It's simply perfect. I'm rereading P myself this year, probably in April. Sometimes you just have to follow your heart and reread the favorites.

ReplyDeleteI'm actually looking forward to the Wrinkle in Time adaptation. It can't be any worse than the last one, for one thing! And I love the casting, on the whole. I mean, I know I may end up furious at it, but I'm more than willing to take the chance. But that may be because I was so disappointed in the last one (the TV version.)
