This is a book I've been meaning to read for a couple of years. And you know what? It did the trick! Douglas Preston's captivating writing pulled me into the narrative and I got caught up in the history of this lost city and all the previous jungle expeditions that trekked through the inhospitable and unexplored Honduran rain forest in search of this ancient legend. It was fascinating and fun. And I always love that primeval jungle setting. Best of all, this adventurous nonfiction tale pulled me out of my bookish funk. Gotta love a book good enough to do that!
Happy Reading!

My whole October has kind of been like that. I'm surprised I've managed to finish anything at all. Glad you finally found one to break the cycle.
ReplyDeleteI hate when I fall into a reading slump. I don't know what to do with myself when I don't have a good book to read. :)
DeleteI'm glad you found something that could pull you out of your funk! It isn't unusual for me to start several books without satisfaction until finding one that pulls me in. Often I go back to the others in a different mood and finish some of them. I'm curious about the Douglas Preston book--all I've ever read have been the Agent Pendergast books. :)
ReplyDeleteHe's written a couple of nonfiction books which I've enjoyed. :)
DeleteYes, sometimes you need just the right book to jumpstart your reading again. When I get into this kind of slump, it's usually because I've just finished a book that turned out to be kind of a dud after it was way to late to completely quit on it. The struggle to finish a dud book usually causes me to have a more difficult time settling into whatever I pick up next. Glad you eventually found the book you needed to find.
ReplyDeleteI find it equally hard to move on to another book when the book I just finished was wonderful and amazing. :D
DeleteI've been so distractible lately--I finally decided to reread Lord of the Rings & that's worked. Sometimes it's tricky!
ReplyDeleteI read one of Douglas Preston's novels not too long ago via a cousin-in-law's recommendation, quite liked it, and have had him in mind. I didn't even know he wrote non-fiction as well.
He's written several nonfiction books; I've enjoyed both of the ones I've read. (His fiction is still my favorite.)
DeleteI'd started a few books lately but ended up giving up on them. Not sure if it's the mood or the premise just didn't interest me. I think both of them play a part in determining my reading journey. ;) That Douglas Preston book sounds good.
ReplyDeleteSometimes it's the writing, too. A book can have a great premise but if the writing is trite or boring I quickly lose interest in the book.
DeleteI've struggled with my reading over the last month to be honest and switched from themed reading to mood reading. At the moment I'm targeting books with reviews that suggest things I don't like in them so I can get them dealt with!
ReplyDeleteIt's good to clear the decks of the books you no longer want to read. And I know what you mean about mood reading! I think that's going to be my reading goal for next year: read whatever I'm in the mood for, damn the lists. :D
DeleteThose reading funks are the worst! I went through one not too long ago. I've found that rereading one of my old favorites or just picking up a new one from one of my favorite authors will usually get me out of it. I'm glad you were able to find something to pull you out of it. That Douglas Preston novel sounds exciting! :)
ReplyDeleteA favorite book does cure a lot of ills doesn't it? :D
DeleteI've never read anything by Douglas Preston, but his books sound like ones I would enjoy. I'll have to give him a shot one of these days. Glad you found a winner to get you out of your slump!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad, too! :D
DeleteI hate those reading slumps! I get them sometimes, too, when nothing really holds my attention. I'm glad you found something that did (and it sounds fascinating!)
ReplyDeleteReading slumps are the worst! I'm glad this one didn't last very long. :)
DeleteIt's interesting how sometimes only a certain book can fit the mood you're in--I started Lost City a few years ago and didn't get far before I returned it to the library and searched for something more in keeping with my mood at the time.
ReplyDeleteGlad it worked for you!
:D It is all about the mood you're in, isn't it?
DeleteI've had those book funk days where you switch from one read to the next nothing grabbing your attention and it's frustrating.
ReplyDeleteI've read several of the Preston/Childs fictional books, and they've been fun adventures, but I've never picked up one of Preston's nonfiction books. Glad to hear it got you out of your funk. :)
It's the worst when you can't find a book you want to read.
DeleteI've been in a bit of a slump for weeks so I can definitely relate! And that Lost City book looks fascinating!
ReplyDeleteSometimes I can read nonfiction when I can't find any fiction books that appeal. Not always. But it worked this time. Hope you get out of your slump soon!
DeleteI'm glad you found one you could dig into. This happens to me too. I usually have to step away and stare at the tv for a days and catch up on podcasts.
ReplyDeleteThat works, too. :)
DeleteI am so glad you were able to find a book that fit your mood!
