The plot: Meg Jennings is a search-and-rescue dog handler for the FBI's Human Scent Evidence Team. Her K-9 partner is a black labrador named Hawk. They're camping in Minnesota with several other search teams for a weekend of water search training. There's also a trials competition for all the handlers and their dogs...a competition Meg hopes she and Hawk will win. But then, on the second day, Hawk alerts to the dead body of one of their competitors. And Meg finds herself one of the suspects. She and her friends must move quickly to find the real killer.
My thoughts: There are so many reasons I love this K-9 mystery series! The setting is always different and interesting. The search-and-rescue work with the dogs is fascinating. And there's not just Meg and Hawk, but also fellow FBI handler Brian with his German Shepherd, Lacey. They make a good team; and their dogs are so endearing! I also love Meg's relationship with firefighter, Todd Webb, and her friendship with newspaper reporter, McCord. It's really the characters and their interactions that make these books so good. (The camping scenes in this one with Meg, Todd and their friends were especially fun.) And, of course, the murder investigation in this one was as compelling as ever. This series just gets better and better, which is another reason why it's one of my favorites.
Happy Reading!
Lone Wolf #1
Storm Rising #3
I have a real weakness for these K-9 books that I never would've expected as I don't have a dog and don't hanker after one. (Allergic.) I shall grab the first book in the series to see if I like it. :-)
ReplyDeleteI love these K-9 books, too. Just know that the first book in this series is probably the weakest...each successive book has seemed to get better and better, so don't give up on this series if you only kind of like the first book.
DeleteI've got this series on my "want to read" list, thanks to your reviews.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good series; I've enjoyed all the books in it. :D
DeleteYou have me so interested in this series, Lark. It sounds like exactly the kind of books I love. Great review! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Ashley. I think you'd like this series. Meg and her dog, Hawk, are very fun characters.
DeleteI read the first book in this series, and-- for some unknown reason-- I've never gotten back to it. Thanks for reminding me!
ReplyDeleteMaybe because the first book was good, but not as good as the books that followed it. I hope you get a chance to try some of the other books. :D
DeleteThank you. Regine
ReplyDeleteHi, Regine! How are you?
DeleteThe series sounds good! I love the cover of the book, wow. Hawk looks like a wonderful Lab.
ReplyDeleteHawk is awesome. I love him.
DeleteI love books that feature dogs so this series sounds perfect for me. :)
ReplyDeleteI love books with dogs as a central feature, too. And this series is a good one.
DeleteI love books that have dogs in them so I have a feeling that I would enjoy this series!
ReplyDeleteIt's a good one. The later books in the series are my favorites.
DeleteI love books with dogs, but I have not read many k9 books.
ReplyDeleteI really like books about search-and-rescue dogs!
DeleteHawk is beautiful! I think I would enjoy this series -- it has dogs and a good mystery. currently my two favourite things <3
ReplyDeleteThey're two of my favorite things, too. :D
DeleteThat sounds pretty good.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good series.
DeleteHi Lark. I am trying not to buy books this year but I do subscribe to kindle unlimited which may be cheating a bit. Anyway the first book in this series Lone Wolf is available on Kindle unlimited so I just downloaded it. I love your reviews and I have learned about so many new books I otherwise never would have tried.
ReplyDeleteThank you! And just know that the second and third and fourth books are even better than the first one. :D
DeleteThere's a mystery series about K-9? Where have I been?!
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of a Netflix movie I've watched recently, forgot the title though. I'm sure I'd love the books!
There are several good K-9 series out right now. Margaret Mizushima and Paula Munier write two others that I really love.
DeleteI really need to start this series after seeing your praise for it. The character's personal lives and relationships make the difference for me too.
ReplyDeleteIt's definitely the characters, both humand and dog, that have kept me loving this series. And the books get better as the series goes along.
DeleteI am adding this to my reading list. Thanks for the recommendation.
ReplyDelete:D Thanks for commenting!
DeleteGreat review, Lark! I love books where the characters make the book!
ReplyDeleteI do, too. I always prefer character-driven novels to action-driven ones.
DeleteI am glad you are continuing to enjoy this series, Lark! I will try it one of these days. :-)
ReplyDeleteIt's a good one. And the dogs in it are so great!
DeleteI do like a good K-9 story and this sounds like a series that I would definitely enjoy.
ReplyDeleteWhat I love about it is that it's gotten better with each book. A rarity in mystery series.
DeleteI don't think I've read many books on rescue dogs. This sounds like a great series.
ReplyDeleteIt is. Alex Kava's Ryder Creed series is a really good one, too, with search and rescue dogs in it. :D
DeleteI was just reading about the rescue dogs that are used during disasters and it's so amazing what they do. This sounds like a good series!
ReplyDeleteThe dogs in this series and what they're able to do are so great. (I like the human characters, too.) ;D
