Bookish Thoughts...

On library book triage.  Do you ever check out too many library books? This happens to me more often than it should. And when it does, I find myself forced into a kind of bookish triage: stacking the books that can't be renewed into the "must read first" pile, throwing the books I'm not sure I really want to read, or that I know I can easily renew for 3 more weeks, into the bottom of my bag, and then hoping I'll get a chance to read the books that are left before they're due. You'd think I'd learn to limit the number of library books I check out, but I never do.

On Little Black Lies.  Sharon Bolton is one of my favorite authors, and her latest mystery is my favorite kind of psychological thriller: page-turning, suspenseful, with unexpected twists and turns, and a nice mix of complicated characters. It's set in the Falkland Islands and centers around some missing children. But it's so much more than that. I loved the setting and definitely did not see the ending coming. To tell more than that would be to give something away. So I'll just say that Little Black Lies is an awesome read.

On my library still being closed for renovations.  It's been over two months! Two very long months and my library is still closed. They were supposed to reopen on July 6th. But they didn't. Now they're saying maybe the middle of August. But I'm not holding my breath. And the next closest library, while nice, is so small it never has any copies of the books I really want to read. It's so frustrating. So, that's my bookish complaint this summer. What's yours?

    1. I really liked Little Black Lies, too. I'm not sure it tops Now You See Me as my favorite, but it comes very close. :)

  2. Once I get on top of my ARCS and bought books, then I plan on joining my library. I'm sure I'll be very familiar with your dilemma then :D

  3. My library is moving in the autumn, and I am going to miss it during the transitions, so I really feel for you. I hope it won't be too long until yours is open again.

    1. Thanks! I didn't realize how dependent I was on my library until it was gone. And no one knows when it will open again. :( Hope your library move goes quickly...and that they don't weed out too many books in the process.

  4. I loved Little Black Lies too, especially the wonderful setting. I didn't see the ending coming either! I hope you don't have to wait too much longer for your library to reopen.

  5. If our library was closed, we would be in the trouble. Especially with the kids, the library is essential during the summer! So are you checking out too many books from the other branch of the library or is that a general problem instead of one right this second?

    1. Too many library books is an ongoing problem...I don't pull as many random books off the shelves from the small library I've been going to while mine is closed...but I have been putting LOTS more books on hold. It's an addiction...but a free one!

  6. My local library recently did renovations and it seemed like it took forever! I'm not familiar with Sharon Bolton's books, but this looks really good. I'll be on the lookout for this book!

    1. If you like psychological thrillers with suspenseful, twisty plots Bolton is a good author to try. She's written several books, and I've enjoyed every one that I've read.

  7. Lark: Do you ever check out too many library books?
    Unruly: Chronically!

Hang in there -- the library renovations will probably be worth the wait!

    1. I hope the renovations are worth the wait...although I never thought the library needed renovating in the first place. (And I REALLY hope that they aren't secretly deleting a ton of books from their shelves while it's closed.) And I'm glad I'm not the only one who checks out too many books from the library. :)

  8. I book triage all the time. Sometimes by the time I have renewed a book twice and not read it, I start realizing it isn't a priority to me. I ALWAYS check out way too many books. It is like my eyes are bigger than my reading capacity. But I like to think I am an optimist at least in books! Little Black Lies sounds good. And my bookish complaint this summer (besides the library renovations that drag on and on) is Too Many Books, Too Little Time to Read Them!!
