I didn't love this book. Some parts were good. But I ended up skimming the rest.
Which is too bad, because I usually like Susan Hill. But even though I didn't end
up loving this particular book, I did love these four quotes from it:
"Cold room, warm bed, good book."
"I thought I had cleared out all the books I would ever need to lose five years ago, but books breed....As fast as I get one out of the back door, two new ones come in through the front."
"A book that cannot be returned to again and again, and still yield
fresh entertainment and insights, is only half a book."
"Reading is magic. Books are magic. It starts when we are shown picture books and realise there is another world beyond the everyday one we know. Once we can read ourselves, we live inside the magic. The only problem is that we have to emerge at the end of a book, and we don't want to leave and return to that dull domestic world we know. The only solution to that problem, of course, is that there is always the next book, and the next and there is bonus magic if it is another in a series we already love, so we are plunging back into a magic other world but one we already know. We feel a lift of the heart, a lurch of the stomach, when we find ourselves in it again."
If this book appeals to you, I'd suggest you read Susan Hill's Howard's End is on the Landing instead. It's also a memoir about books and reading, but of the two, I think it's the better read.
Happy Reading!
The spines look lovely, is this the same author of The Woman In Black? xxx

Yeah, it is. :)
DeleteLove the quotes! And the title Howard's End Is on the Landing is terrific. :)
ReplyDeleteIsn't it? I really loved reading that one. :)
DeleteI liked Howards End is on the Landing but wished she had wrote a little more about books and less about her life. I understand, however, that books about reading have a good dose of memoir in them! I will probably skip this and just enjoy the quotes you provided!
ReplyDeleteI do have a couple of other books about books yet to read on my shelf starting with The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe and I read My Life with Bob by Pamela Paul last year and liked it.
I haven't read The End of Your Life Book Club either. And My Life With Bob isn't one I'd heard of but it looks good. I'll have to see if my library has it. Thanks! :)
DeleteI loved that "books are magic" quote so very much!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that one great? And so true! :)
DeleteI like all of those quotes and I agree that the best books are the ones that can be read again and again. Sorry you didn't love this book - maybe I'll try Howards End is on the Landing instead. :)
ReplyDeleteI liked her Howards End book much better than this one, although this one does have several mentions of birds in it which I did enjoy. :)
DeleteThose are such great quotes! Books are definitely magic! :)
ReplyDeleteDespite that you not liking the book, at least you've found a few great quotes you like so it's not totally a bad thing. :)
ReplyDeleteExactly! I love me a good bookish quote. :)
DeleteLove the quotes! I love that other people get that love for books! It makes me feel connected.
ReplyDeleteI like that, too. :)
DeleteGlad you enjoyed them as much as me. :)
ReplyDeleteI haven't read anything by Susan Hill, but I do love these quotes you shared! I am sorry the book itself wasn't better for you.
ReplyDeleteI liked parts of it, but didn't really love it overall.
DeleteOh that's a bummer this one wasn't a winner. I've enjoyed some of her books a lot so I may still give this one a go one of these days! Those are nice quotes.
ReplyDeleteIt's not all bad or boring, I just didn't love it as much as her previous books. Maybe because I wasn't as familiar with many of the books and authors she talks about.
DeleteI do like those book quotes. Maybe I will try one of the Susan Hill books.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Howards End is on the Landing, and there were parts of this one that I liked as well. So give them both a try and let me know what you think! :)
