Funny moment on the second day of school: When a cute 5th grader tried to take a bite of her sandwich only to realize she was still wearing her mask. It made all the kids around her laugh.
Scary moment of the week: Waiting to hear whether a close co-worker's COVID test was positive or negative. (Happily, it was negative!)
Happy moment of the week: Discovering Julian Fellowes' adaptation of Anthony Trollope's book, Dr. Thorne. I still haven't read any of Trollope's novels, but I'm loving this mini series: the characters, the costumes, the drama...it's delightful.
Enjoy your Thursday!
That the most Poignant and funniest moments have to do with masks make so much sense in this world right now.
ReplyDeleteThat's become our world right now, hasn't it?
DeleteThird times the charm. The power keeps cutting off and on. I think this is a good way to evaluate the week, Lark.
ReplyDeleteI hate when the power does that!
DeleteGreat post!
ReplyDelete:D Thanks.
DeleteOh - I loved Dr. Thorne! My kids are starting back up school here in Wisconsin next week with masks. It should be interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe kids here seem to be handling the whole mask thing better than the adults. Good luck next week! :)
DeleteGlad to hear your coworker is okay. Stay safe Lark. Agree, that we all need more happy moments right now and so I am going to watch Dr. Thorne. Also I would absolutely recommend the miniseries North and South starring Richard Armitage. I think you can find it on netflix.
ReplyDeleteI'll look for that one! Thanks. :D
DeleteReally good post.
ReplyDeleteI am a big Anthony Trollope fan. I actually have not seen the Miniseries adaptation of Dr. Thorne. I thought that it was a great book, but it was part of The Chronicles of Barsetshire series which I would recommend reading in order.
So many people love Trollope! I've been meaning to read him for years. But you know how that goes. ;D
DeleteI've read the first two of Trollope's Barsetshire novels and loved them. My next one is Dr. Thorne funnily enough. Because I hadn't read the book I didn't watch the TV series, I prefer to read the book first.
ReplyDeleteI usually prefer to read the book first, too. But in this case I wasn't sure I'd ever get around to reading this Trollope. Of course, now having seen the movie version, I want to read it even more. :)
DeleteGlad to hear your coworker's test came back negative! Doctor Thorne looks like such a great miniseries and I see that it's on Amazon Prime. Definitely adding that to my watchlist. :D
ReplyDeleteIt was a great 4-part mini series. I think you'll really like it. :)
DeleteIt is strange not to really see whole faces anymore, right? At the hospital I sometimes don't recognize co-workers until they talk. We have hair coverings as well as masks and hospital provided scrubs we change into everyday so it's hard to tell who is who. Glad to hear the friend tested negative!
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to recognize people with their face masks on. And with their hair covered, too? I'd never know who anyone is!
DeleteYou nailed the definition of "poignant" with the example you gave from the elementary school. If that doesn't put a tear in your eye, nothing will.
ReplyDeleteIt did make me feel sad...for the teacher and for all his students. But I bet this is one school year they never forget.
DeleteAll these moments seem so surreal, isn't it? I wonder when we'd have our normal lives back. Sniff...
ReplyDeleteSurreal is a good word for this whole entire year. I'm hoping things might head back towards normal in 2021...fingers crossed!
DeleteIt is certainly strange to have all these new firsts with the start of school. I certainly hope all these precautions won't be needed in the long run, but I'm glad your school is taking this seriously.
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check out that Fellows adaptation. We've been really enjoying Downton recently.
If you like Downton Abbey I think you'd like Dr. Thorne. It's pretty fun. And Julian Fellowes does a little commentary at the beginning and end of each episode which I also really enjoyed. :)
DeleteThe Julian Fellowes's Dr Thorne is excellent--I watched it after I read the book and loved that it was faithful to the book and didn't drag or plod.
ReplyDeleteThese are tough times but we will get through them. Take care.
I really enjoyed it, too! I wish Fellowes would make more of Trollope's books into similar mini series. :)
DeleteI feel so bad for the kids and teachers. This must be the most stressful school year ever. On a really good note so glad your co-worker is well! I hadn't heard for the Dr. Thorne series sounds good!
ReplyDeleteStarting back to school was a bit stressful. But the kids seem to be handling it pretty well.
DeleteThanks for sharing these lovely and happy thoughts Lark!
ReplyDeleteI will put Dr. Thorne on my "to-watch" list. I loved the books. Right now I am watching the 1970s adaptation of Trollope's Palliser novels and enjoying seeing the casting and the costumes as well as noticing what stayed in and what got cut.
I think you'll like Dr. Thorne; I was wishing it was a bit longer myself.
DeleteIt's weird how we took so many things for granted...going on a holiday, getting a medical appointment, going to browse the shops, takeaway food...I wonder if we'll ever get back to that.
ReplyDeleteI hope so! I miss that part of life.
DeleteHave a great and safe week.
ReplyDelete:D Thank you!
DeleteI am glad your coworker's test results were negative! That must have been a relief. Students are still learning remotely in most of California--entirely in my county. I hope you have a great week.
ReplyDeleteIt was a relief! And we're now in our second week of in person school and so far so good. (knock on wood)
DeleteOoh, wasn’t aware DrThorne had been made into a miniseries! Strange times - school children here aren’t required to wear masks.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching Dr. Thorne. I think Fellowes did a good job with it. And I'm not sure I would have gone back to work at my school if masks weren't required for everyone; it wouldn't have felt safe.
