This week's theme: Favorite Book Quotes.
I've actually done several posts with favorite quotes, so the only challenge this time around was choosing quotes I hadn't posted yet. Luckily, I keep a notebook of really good quotes.
Here are ten of them that I really love:
"...bookshops are magic, and books are the road maps by which misfits find each other."
--Wendy Welch, The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap
"Perhaps all dragons in our lives are really princesses just
waiting to see us just once being beautiful and courageous."
--Rainer Maria Rilke, Letter to Young Poet
"Once the storm is over you won't remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won't even be sure, in fact, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won't be the same person who walked in. That's what the storm is all about."
--Haruki Murakami, Kafaka on the Shore
"Olive had a fear of everything, but her greatest fear was of being afraid."
--Henry James, The Bostonians
"I'm reminded that God often leads us down paths that seem unsafe and uncertain, but if we could see the path as He sees it, we would surely choose that same trial every time."
--Stephen Kirkpatrick, Lost in the Amazon
"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours. If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put the foundations under them."
--Henry David Thoreau, Walden
"One can't pray for different musical notes. One can only ask to play as well as possible the notes one is given."
--Peter Hoeg, The Quiet Girl
"I have an idea that the only thing which makes it possible to regard this world we live in without disgust is the beauty which now and then men create out of chaos. The pictures they paint, the music they compose, the books they write, and the lives they lead. Of all these the richest in beauty is the beautiful life. That is the perfect work of art."
--W. Somerset Maugham, The Painted Veil
"Happiness is like the ocean. Sometimes swelling, sometimes retreating. Constantly shifting. Sudden swells are what made it all so fun."
--Erica Spindler, In Silence
"There is no habit more valuable than that of dropping into a bookstore occasionally to look round--to look both inward and outward."
--Christopher Morley, The Haunted Bookshop
Happy Reading!
All of your choices are wonderful. I do think I like the first one best, but it is a difficult choice. :)
ReplyDeleteThat first one was my first choice for this week's post. Just seemed to fit. :D
DeleteI love that way of looking at dragons.
ReplyDeleteMy post .
Rilke has a way with words. :)

ReplyDeleteHappy TTT!
It's a great one, isn't it? :D
DeleteGood quotes though I have not heard any of these. I really like the first one.
ReplyDeleteI've seen your monthy book quotes and they're wonderful. I love a good quote.
Have a lovely day.
:D I love a good quote, too. Thanks for your comments, Lissa!
DeleteThe one about Olive Chancellor is so good. That's her in a nutshell, isn't it? I thought the Peter Hoeg was also especially fun.
ReplyDeleteAnd bookshops!
I had to include at least one Henry James quote. ;D And I love that Hoeg one, too.
DeleteLovely quotes! The first and the last, perfect. However, I also love the Murakami quote. Thanks for sharing, Lark!
ReplyDeleteIsn't that Murakami great? It's one of my favorites. :)

DeleteNice list! I've never heard of these books, but I want to read them now.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad. Thanks for commenting! :)
DeleteFine list. I loved the Haruki Murakami quote most.
ReplyDeleteThat's my favorite Murakami quote! :)
DeleteGreat quotes, the first and the last being my favourites. :-)
ReplyDeleteQuotes about books and bookstores always ring true for me, too. :)
DeleteI always love your quotes - so apt.
ReplyDelete"Of all these the richest in beauty is the beautiful life."
Isn't that a great quote? :)
DeleteI do like the first quote so much. In the book community, no matter our different tastes I think we all relate to that one. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's why I like bookish people so much! :D
DeleteI don't generally keep note of book quotes personally. I guess I don't really have time to do much with them except put the odd one in a book review!
ReplyDelete:D I sometimes wonder why I still write favorite quotes down, but every once in awhile I find myself rereading them, and needing them.
DeleteI have to admit, the quote from The Bostonians is resonating a lot more with me currently. Great selection though -- lots of food for thought.
ReplyDeleteI relate to that Henry James quote a lot lately, too.
DeleteThat's a wonderful selection of quotes, Lark, very inspirational to read them on this sunny Wednesday morning.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sam! :)

ReplyDeleteI thought it was fitting for all of us bookish misfits. :)
DeleteGreat post and these are great quotations. There are so many worthwhile things that can be extracted from books. I wonder if that Henry James quote influenced FDR’s famous speech.
ReplyDeleteIf FDR read Henry James that would make me like him more. :)
DeleteI love that Wendy Welch quote—how true! I wasn't familiar with The Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap, but I'm adding it on Goodreads right now.
ReplyDeleteIt's a good one! Especially if you like reading about books and bookstores. :D Thanks for commenting!
DeleteI love the Little Bookstore of Big Stone Gap, I follow her on Facebook, so many cats!
ReplyDeleteThat's one of my favorite books! :)
DeleteI'm copying these in my journal!
