Two Recent Reads...

Patricia Briggs and C.S. Harris are two authors that I love, mostly because of two series that they write. The two series couldn't be more different:  Briggs writes urban fantasy books that have werewolves, vampires, the fae, and an unforgettable heroine named Mercy Athena Thompson; Harris writes historical fiction mysteries set in the early 1800s in England with an equally unforgettable hero named Sebastian St. Cyr. What they have in common is great writing, well-plotted adventures, and characters that I love. They also each have new books out this year.

Silence Fallen is the tenth book in Briggs' Mercy Thompson series. I actually wasn't sure I was going to like this one as much as all the others because Mercy and Adam (her werewolf husband) are separated in the very first chapter when Mercy gets kidnapped, and they spend the rest of the book running around Italy and Prague trying to get back to each other. But once again Briggs came through with an entertaining and enjoyable fantasy adventure that I ended up reading all in one day because I found it so unputdownable.

As for Where the Dead Lie, it's the twelfth book about Sebastian St. Cyr Viscount Devlin. In this latest mystery, some of London's street rats are being abducted and brutally murdered; no one seems to care about their fate except for Sebastian. But he's determined not to let this killer go unpunished. Dark and intense, this particular book may not be my favorite in this series, but I still enjoyed reading it. I mean, it's got Sebastian St. Cyr in it---and what could be better than that?

It's nice to have authors you can count on and series to read that never seem to disappoint. These are only two of mine; what are some of yours?

Happy Reading!

  1. Patricia Briggs! I remember loving her books earlier (not that I don't now, just haven't been reading them). As for C.S. Harris, I've not read anything by this author though I've read many good reviews about this series.

    1. I'm a fan of both authors, although I tend to stick with Briggs' Mercy Thompson books and not her other ones.

  2. I totally agree, it is great to have a series that you love and can depend on! My only fear is series that may never finish (ahem, George RR Martin). I guess that is part of the “dependable” point.

I think the series of books I am most looking forward to is the Wayfarer series by Becky Chambers. I adored A Long Way to a Small Angry Planet and the follow up, A Close and Common Orbit was great too. So I hope Chambers continues to produce excellent “cozy Sci-Fi” (as some are coining it).

    1. I haven't read any books by Chambers, but I'll have to check her out. :)

  3. I've seen Harris around but have yet to pick one up. This looks like a good one! The only series I've fallen for so far is JK Rowling's (aka Robert Galbraith) Cormoran Strike books. Three so far and waiting for (hopefully) a fourth one soon. So good!

  4. I love the Mercy Thompson books too. I'm only 6 books or so into the series though. I have the next book in my TBR pile that I plan on getting to soon. I might like her latest when I get to it because, to be honest, I can't stand Adam. :( He drives me nuts but the rest of the characters are so great.

    1. That's so funny! Adam is in this one, he's just not with Mercy. :)

  5. I was only introduced to Patricia Briggs's books late last year, and I was instantly hooked. I prefer the Mercy series to the Charles series, but I will pretty much read anything about either pack at this point! I saw a picture of someone wearing a "Hauptman Security" t-shirt, and though I don't wear t-shirts much I really want that one :)

I think C.S. Harris does a fantastic job with the Regency settings. And Hero is such a great character! But I started to find the violence in the books a bit too much for me.

    1. I'd want that tee shirt, too!! :)
I also really like Hero. Probably because the first book she's in is also the first book in the series that I happened to read. And I like her and Devlin so much I tend to overlook when the story gets a little dark or violent. Because they're not all like that. :)

    2. Were you as surprised by Bran as I was?

    3. I was! I was totally not expecting that little twist at the end. :)

  6. I've only read the first Sebastian St. Cyr mystery, but have the second and hope to read it soon. Had no idea the series was already up to nine.

    1. That happens to me all the time with book series; this is one of the few series I'm actually all caught up with. :D

  7. I'm going to have to check the library for Patricia Briggs! I enjoyed Where the Dead Lie, but not as much as the previous one. I've followed the series for a long time and am always ready for the next one. :)

    1. I liked the previous one better, too, maybe because Hero was in it more. But they've all been good. :)

  8. I'm not a fan of following a series but I will check out Harris. I really need to find a new author I can count on!

    1. I started with the third book in Harris' Sebastian St. Cyr series and ended up liking it so much I went back and read all the rest. And I'm still reading them. So for me, this series really works. :)

  9. I am way behind on the Mercy Thompson series, and I have yet to read Harris's books. I think I have the first in his series though.

    1. Series are tricky for me because I'm always falling behind in them, too. But I like having them there in the wings waiting for when I need a really good book to read. :)
