Loving Summer...

While I love the splendors of spring and autumn, summer has always been my favorite time of year. When I was growing up, summer conjured up magical days of Popsicles (preferably banana), time with friends, sprinklers to run through on hot August days, swim lessons, bike rides, and playing games outside at night, with plenty of hours left over in which to daydream and read. Sometimes I miss those days. But summer still has a lot to love about it:
Bells Canyon

  • Finally packing away my winter coat and pulling out my flip-flops
  • Time off from work
  • Falling asleep to the sound of crickets chirping
  • The smell of rain on hot pavement
  • Hiking my favorite mountain trails
  • Photographing the wildflowers
  • Picking that first bowl of ripe strawberries from my garden
  • Black-chinned hummingbirds at my feeder
  • Tiger swallowtail butterflies in my lavender
    Tiger Swallowtail
  • Endless skies of blue
  • Celebrating Pioneer Day
  • Birdwatching along the river
  • Campfire S'mores
  • Sparklers on the 4th of July
  • Grilling burgers in the backyard
  • Reading outside in my favorite chair
  • Watching the sunset
  • Longer days and starry nights

What do you love about summer?
Hope you all have a great one!

  2. Lark, I love this post! The way you describe summer is spot on. And everything you mentioned sounds absolutely perfect. Summer always means a sense of freedom and peace to me. A time to relax and just be. And a time to read, read, and read :) Enjoy your summer!!

  3. I'm such a winter girl! I should be a Stark of Winterfell with my own direwolf! I do like sunsets, hummingbirds (don't get them in the UK but I love them!) butterflies, and the smell of rain though!

    1. I love how quiet it gets when it snows in the winter, but I'm not a huge fan of when it gets bitter cold, or of scraping ice off my car.

  4. I used to love summer. Now I find it unbearably hot and aggravating. Thanks for reminding me of some of the great things about it. I do love the longer days and if it would ever rain here I love that smell.

    1. Growing up, the heat never used to bother me, but now I have to admit I really don't love those 100-degree days!

  5. I also love the longer days. When I come home from work, I feel more inspired to DO things when it is still light outside!

    1. Exactly! I'm such a hermit during the winter, it's nice to get out and about in summer. :)

  6. That is a fabulous ode to summer. I like everything you list, but I melt in the hot weather. Anything more than 85 and I'm done for. That said, I think it's important to enjoy every season in its turn.

Home-grown strawberries are the absolute best!

    1. I don't like the really hot temps either. I could happily live forever at 78-80 degrees. :)

  7. Being living in a country with summer all year around robs the fun of enjoying it fully but I do appreciate summer when beach outing or any outdoor activities are concerned, otherwise I'll stay in an air-conditioning room or on the fan because yes, most of the times our weather here is hot and humid. That's why I'm always so envious of peeps who can experience autumn and even winter. :)

    1. The change of seasons is a good thing...although I could do with a lot less winter and a lot more spring and autumn. :D

  8. Tomatoes, fresh from the garden. Early sunrises and late sunsets. :)

  9. The heat and humidity have spoiled summer for me. The other day it was 90 degrees, 92 per cent humidity, and a "feels like" of 107! But I so agree with Bill about fresh tomatoes. :)

    1. That hot and that humid is a lethal combination. I'm sorry it's spoiling your summer. Stay inside where it's nice and cool...and read another book. :)

  10. Summer and I don't get along very well. Maybe because it's summer 9 months out of the year here in Arizona. Blech! I'll never get used to it. I'm glad YOU like summer, though :) Oh, and I'll be enjoying Fourth of July in your neck of the woods (Provo) this year, so that will be fun.

    1. If I lived in Arizona I wouldn't like summer either; you guys get WAY too hot down there. Triple digits is probably my least favorite weather. Good luck surviving the heat! And I hope you have a very fun 4th of July in Provo...although we probably won't be much cooler up here in July. :D
