Summer reading...

My summer vacation has officially started (one of the benefits of working at an elementary school), which means my summer reading begins today as well. And there are SO many books I want to read. My list of mysteries, popcorn thrillers, romance, historical fiction and nonfiction books is long enough for three summers at least, which gives me lots of books to choose from these next two and a half months. The only problem is deciding where to start.

I just finished reading The Swamp Fox by John Oller, the true story of how Marion Francis fought the British in South Carolina and helped win the Revolutionary War. I did not know anything about the Southern front or what went on in South Carolina during the American Revolution. Needless to say, I found this biography well-written, informative and completely engrossing. And I have new respect for the quiet but determined Marion Francis and his small band of dragoons. I am planning on reading a few more books about the Revolutionary War this summer starting with Band of Giants by Jack Kelly (which I ended up having to buy because my library decided to get rid of its copy last month. It's so annoying when libraries get rid of books you were planning on checking out!)

As for my first fiction reads of summer I'm trying to decide between Coram House by Bailey Seybolt, A Murder Most Camp by Nicolas DiDomizio and The Inklings Detective Agency by John R. Kelly. At least those are the top three books sitting in my library bag. I might change my mind and dig deeper into the bag for something else. Who knows. I'm just looking forward to a summer of free reading. What about you? What books are you hoping to read this summer?

Happy Reading!

  1. So happy that you're now on your summer break, Lark. I hope you find some excellent books to read over the next couple of months! I have a list of half a dozen I want to get to, including Nephthys by Rachel Driscoll (Egypt yarn), The Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons and The Two Towers by Tolkien. I have several crime series I want to catch up on too. Happy summer!

    1. Catching up on series is always good...and feels like a neverending goal. I have some series I'd like to catch up on, too. And I saw a fantasy movie the other day that's really put me in the mood to reread The Hobbit. So that might happen this summer, too. :D

  2. I hope you have a great summer vacation and enjoy whatever you decide to read! I don't think I've read any nonfiction about the Revolutionary War, so The Swamp Fox sounds interesting to me.

  3. Yay for summer break! I don't know much about the Revolutionary War outside of the big Virginia/northern battles. This sounds like an interesting read.

  5. It was common in the 19th century for men in one of my family lines to bear the name Francis Marion, and during the Revolution my great-great(etc) was located in that area of South Carolina. The Swamp Fox was obviously an inspiration!

    2. He's hugely popular in South Carolina. And for good reason. He did so much to help win the Revolutionary War. And thanks for commenting! :D

  6. Enjoy your summer break!

I read a little bit about Marion Francis in some book on the American Revolution--I forget which one. I'll bet that was pretty fascinating.

  9. Happy Vacation, Lark! We are a family of school teachers and administrators, so both my daughters, one grandson, my granddaughter, and one son-in-law are enjoying some downtime now to one degree or another.

Revolutionary War history is especially fascinating to me mainly because we covered such a limited part of it geographically in every class I ever took on it. A lot more happened down South than most people realize.

    1. I certainly never realized how much of it took place down South. Or the importance of all those battles. Most history classes only talk about Boston and Yorktown. Which is why I liked this book so much. And both my parents were schoolteachers, so I grew up thinking you always got summers off. ;D

  12. Yay for summer vacation! This one sounds interesting. I always think of the Revolutionary War and the Civil War as being a long time ago, but it really hasn't been that long! Kind of scary when you think about it!

  13. That's nice you're on your summer break! So much to read is a good problem. I guess I need to brush up on who Marion Francis was during the Revolution ... thx for the history.

  15. Yay for summer break! I miss having summers off, but I can't complain, I still get plenty of reading in. I think I am going to try to finish the Only Magic in the Building series this summer, plus Pepper Basham's newest, A Brewed Awakening, and Lynette Eason's Lake Hero series. I hope you enjoy everything you decide on :)

    1. The Only Magic in the Building series is a fun one! I've read all but one of them. I should finish that series up this summer, too. :D And I love that Pepper Basham has a new one out. I'll have to see if I can get it from my library. Happy reading!
