Random Thoughts...

Polar Bears!

Just because they're cute...and I like them.
(And everything else going on in the world is either stressful or stupid.
My prayers are definitely with the people of Ukraine!)

Books I checked out of the library yesterday:
Dark Horse by Gregg Hurwitz (Yay...the new Evan Smoak! I can't wait.)
Dead Silence by S.A. Barnes
Nomadland by Jessica Bruder
The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck (my next classic)
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (my next buddy read with Melody)
Scales and Sensibility by Stephanie Burgis
Lockdown on London Lane by Beth Reekles
The Deepest of Secrets by Kelley Armstrong (one of my most favorite series!)

I'm loving the TV show Ghosts. If you haven't seen it yet, it's hilarious!

But I'm not doing so well on reading the classics, or the books from off my own shelves.
Classics read in 2022:  1
TBR books read so far:  0

OOPS! I'll have to try harder next month.

I saw this quote last week and totally loved it, so I thought I'd share....

Have a great weekend and
Happy Reading!!!

  1. The Grapes of Wrath is a book I couldn't put down. I was fascinated with that story about the Great Depression. I hope it captivates you, too.

    1. That whole story about the dust bowl and the sharecroppers and their exodus to California is interesting. And I do like the way Steinbeck writes. But his books do tend to take me a little longer to read. :)

  2. Polar bears are so cute!

I want to read Six Crimson Cranes. I hope you like it.

I haven't heard of Ghosts, but I want to check it out now. I've been looking for a new show to watch.

    I love that quote!

  3. Is that the Nomadland of the movie? I assume so. It's a movie I must get to, perhaps I'll check Netflix for it later.

I'm doing ok with my TBR but like you I've only read one for the Classics challenge and that was an easy read. I must do better too so I'll go for The Age of Innocence this month. :-)

You're so right about the world at the moment. How can things be getting worse after Covid? Surely the world deserves a break 'soon'!

    1. The world kind of sucks right now. I feel so bad for the people of Ukraine. It would be nice of things actually improved in the world this year. But I'm not holding my breath. I haven't seen the movie version of Nomadland, but I think the book is the same story. Good luck reading Age of Innocence! I really love Edith Wharton. I'm tackling The Grapes of Wrath next with my classics. I like Steinbeck, but his stories always move a bit more slowly than the usual thrillers I read. :)

  5. I love polar bears and elephants - well, I love ALL animals just about. Grapes of Wrath was very good, my favorite Steinbecks are East of Eden and Of Mice and Men.

    Those poor people of Ukraine:(

    1. I really liked Of Mice and Men when I read it in high school. I haven't read East of Eden yet, but I hope to. And polar bears and elephants are the best. :)

  6. We watched the movie "Nomadland" on one of the streaming services last year. (Hulu, maybe???) It was excellent. Well, anything with Frances McDormand can't be too bad.

I have boundless admiration for the people of Ukraine in their struggle against the premeditated and unjust war waged on them by Mr. Putin. I think he has bitten off more than he can chew. And in that regard, your quote is very apropos.

    1. Yes! Books can be the best escape when everything else is stupid and stressful. And I'm looking forward to reading Nomadland; I've heard it's a really good book.

  8. So, I laughed out loud with your polar bears and immediately thought of this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbZtKqm_Ums
Had you seen it before? I am doing okay with reading books on my shelves, but could be better! Have a good weekend!

  9. I hope you enjoy Scales and Sensibility. I had a lot of fun reading that one. And I've watched a few episodes of Ghosts and liked it. I really need to get back to it. Have you seen the BBC version of the show? I've watched a few of those and loved them. It's interesting seeing the similarities and differences between the two versions. :)

  12. So many good titles to check over! Yes, I'm a fan of the Rockton series by Armstrong. Hoping this isn't the last, as had been stated. And the Evan Smoak series, yikes I am still up to book 3 but now that I'm being reminded might search my library for it. And that book quote, it's spot-on, love it.

  14. That's a nice library haul. You're TBR list must be enormous because, like me, you always seem to come home with a substantial number of library books.

I've read Grapes of Wrath a couple of times and, of course, have seen the movie, and it still touches me every time I read it. Some say that Steinbeck is underrated, some that he's overrated...I don't know the answer, but I love his work even though it does seem to be a little uneven when you start exploring his whole catalog.

    1. Hi, Sam! How are you? My TBR list is indeed enormous (and getting longer by the day!); and yes, I always check out way too many books from the library. I just can't seem to help myself. I'm liking Grapes of Wrath so far, but everything that's happening makes me feel so bad for the Joad family! It all feels so hopeless, its' sad. But I love the way Steinbeck writes. If any American writer is overrated it's Hemingway IMO, though I haven't read all of his books either.

  15. Love the polar bears! That quizzical look.

I thought Grapes of Wrath was pretty great. We read The Winter of Our Discontent in high school, and that was a high school classic I actually enjoyed... Steinbeck has got a bunch of great ones.
