Bookish thoughts...

On springcleaning.  Besides washing a winter's worth of dirt off the windows and cleaning out my closet and getting rid of the clothes and shoes I no longer wear, I've been doing a little bookish springcleaning as well. First, I tackled the teetering TBR pile by my bed; I read three, discarded four, and somehow managed to find places for the rest on my already overcrowded shelves. I didn't tackle them, but the floor of my room is now free of books. I also went through my Goodreads "want to read" list, deleting all the books that I didn't remember putting on it, and the ones I don't want to read any more, shrinking it to a slightly more manageable length. Despite these accomplishments, I still have to finish springcleaning my house, and then I have to tackle the mess that is my backyard. Sigh. I think I'd rather curl up on the couch with a good book and read instead.

On summer splurging.  I don't know what it is about this time of year, but whenever summer nears I always get this urge to do some book shopping. I think it might be because I spend the first part of the year trying to be good and making a conscious effort to not buy any new books, or at least not very many--I mean I already have a ton of unread books sitting on my TBR shelf, so I really don't need to add more. But by May or June, my willpower is gone, and my book-buying addiction has kicked into high gear, and I can't resist filling my Amazon cart with books, books, and more books. What will I be splurging on this summer? Right now, my cart is full of ghost stories and post-apocalyptic survival fiction, with a few psychological thrillers and one P.G. Wodehouse for good measure. And you know what? I'm already feeling better. So here's to a little bookish splurging...and an upcoming bookish summer.

Happy Reading!

  1. I started on it today by scrubbing the bathroom. It looks more or less fit for human habitation but as soon as it is fixed, I'll be letting loose on the walls and skirting boards with one of those steam cleaners just to get every last dirt grain! And I did the ironing which has been glaring at me for over a week...

  2. Ha! My spring cleaning stopped short of windows, but they taunt me each day that I refuse to take care of them. Book splurges are so much more satisfying than any other kind. No weight gain, no guilt for overspending on an item than only gives brief rewards--books have long-term benefits in entertainment, anticipation, and personal comfort.

    1. You're SO right about the benefits of splurging on books and not food or expensive shoes. And books are much more satisfying in the long run. :)

  3. Good for you for purging some TBR titles; I have stacks and shelves of them too. You mention a favorite author of mine, P.G. Wodehouse. His books always bring me smiles so are worth their weight in gold.

    1. Wodehouse makes me smile, too, which is why I always want to have some of his books around. :)

  4. Well, I think after all that spring cleaning, you deserve a little book buying spree as a reward!

  5. Spring cleaning and book splurging sounds like the right balance to me :) You can never go wrong with Wodehouse - love his Jeeves and Wooster books!

  6. The only spring cleaning I’ve managed is washing windows but since I hate washing windows I’ll call that a success. I need to go through my Goodreads TBR and clean it up but I’m so lazy. Congrats on your spring cleaning. It feels so good, doesn’t it?

    1. It does feel good to get some things done...and to be able to look out of my windows and not see muddy spots everywhere! Now I just need to tackle my yard.

  7. Well done! I try really hard to add books I want to read to an electronic list (like goodreads) instead of acquiring them right away. It is much easier to delete a book from a list than it is to get rid of the object from my home unread.

I hear you on yard work. I hate doing it. So do reward yourself with a new book! :D

  8. Spring cleaning, ugh. I hate cleaning the windows the most. Book shelves and book piles are another matter though. ;)

I think you deserve some books splurging after all that cleaning. These days I only buy books from my favourite authors.

    1. That's the safest way to go! But sometimes the only way I can read books by new authors is to buy them and hope that they're good. :)

  9. I'm moving and I've been sorting through books. Luckily I've been able to let go of some of the books . . . but I still have quite a few! I'm behind on all of my spring cleaning as I try to get the new house ready and will have the old house to get rid of!

  10. Well after weeding out books it's only natural to go book shopping right? :) I need to do some serious spring cleaning as well! I wonder what you'll buy!

  11. I desperately need to do some spring cleaning. We just seem to be so busy always though. I do little bits at a time, but I feel like I never make a dent. I could use going through my books. Like you though, once I do, I'll be adding more. :-)

  12. Sounds like some great spring cleaning at your place! This year I caught the spring cleaning bug, too — I’ve been clearing out objects I no longer use. And I’ve even been weeding some books to make room for new arrivals. Feels great!

  13. I wish I could say my floor was free of books! I need to work on that . . . I can't wait to read your reviews of all of the ghost stories and post-apocalyptic survival fiction you're getting!

  14. I sorted through my TBR stacks a few weeks ago and I was surprised by how many books there were that I don't want to read anymore. I guess I need to be more careful when book shopping.

    1. That happens to me, too. I get excited about a book, buy it, never read it...and then lose interest in it altogether. :D
