Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly meme hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week's them is a Love Freebie in honor of Valentine's Day. But instead of doing a list of favorite romances, which I've done in the past, I decided to center my top ten list this week around a game I love to play instead: CHESS. So here's my list of 10 books with a chess theme on the cover or in the title.
The Flanders Panel by Arturo Perez-Reverte
The Eight by Katherine Neville
The Queen's Gambit by Walter Tevis
Gentlemen & Players by Joanne Harris
Bishop's Knight by Katie Reus
Check & Mate by Ali Hazelwood
The Rook by Daniel O'Malley
Curiosity by Gary Blackwood
Mystery Mile by Margery Allingham
Hunter's Green by Phyllis A. Whitney
Horrorscape by Nenia Campbell
Happy Reading!
Love The Queen’s Gambit. Regine

DeleteI remember The Eight being quite a sensation when it first came out, although I don't recall much else about it. Have you read Dorothy Dunnett's Lymond Chronicles that starts with The Game of Kings? At one point in the series there is a deadly chess match using real people.
ReplyDeleteI love the sound of a deadly chess match using real people! I'll have to look that book up. :D
DeleteWhat a clever topic! I had no idea there were so many chess-related titles.
ReplyDeleteIt surprised me a little, too. But I'm glad there are because it made coming up with this TTT list really easy. :D
DeleteI love those covers. It's surprising how many books there are with chess themes.
ReplyDeleteIt really is. And I could have added several more...but these were my favs.
DeleteLove your twist on the topic! Seeing The Rook on your list reminded me that I still need to read it. It sounds so good! :)
ReplyDeleteIt really does. :D
DeleteI knew you would have Check & Mate on here! I loved that book. Fun topic!
ReplyDeleteA chess list would not be complete without that Ali HAzelwood romance. ;D
DeleteI didn't realize there were so many books with chess on the cover. Fun tweak on TTT! I've only read Check & Mate from this collection.
ReplyDeleteI still need to read that one! Of the books on this list I've only read #s1, 4 and 10.
DeleteThat's an interesting list. I haven't read any of them but I did enjoy the television adaptation of "The Queen's Gambit."
ReplyDeleteI've heard only good things about the book and the TV series.
DeleteOh, it's nice to see HUNTER'S GREEN on the list. Read that way, way back. The chess set was shrubbery sculpted in that way, right? Good memories.
ReplyDeleteMy mom loved Phyllis A. Whitney's books and introduced me to her when I was still in my teens. :D
DeleteI like Katie Reus but haven't read that one yet.
ReplyDeleteShe has another one with a chess-sounding title that might be a sequel to this one; but I haven't read either one. Yet. :D
DeleteAdd Counter Attack by Patricia Bradley :)
ReplyDeleteThank you for mentioning that one. It definitely fits on this list. :D
DeleteGreat theme! I think I remember hearing The Rook was good, and love that cover on Mystery Mile
ReplyDeleteThe Rook intrigues me. Hopefully I can get around to reading it and Mystery Mile this year. 🤞
DeleteThat is a lot of covers that involve chess! I haven't read any of these, though I did see The Queen's Gambit. Happy TTT!
ReplyDeleteThe book looks and sounds really good.
DeleteNo matter how hard I worked at it, I was never much good at chess, but after reading The Queen's Gambit I was just about ready to try again. That's a great book.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to reading that one. And I'm not super great at chess, but I love playing it. :D
DeleteFun take on the topic! I've never played much chess but I'm fascinated by chess sets. I've been wanting to read The Queen's Gambit and the Margery Allingham.
ReplyDeleteThose are both on my TBR list, too. And Chess sets are so cool. I always want to buy them. ;D
DeleteThis was a very niche take and look at all those books! I thought of Queen's Gambit right away, which I haven't read. Check & Mate is on my tbr!
ReplyDeleteCheck & Mate is on my TBR, too! :D
DeleteNot being a chess player, I've never read a book about chess (although actually I did read The Rook, now that I look at the cover again). Congrats on such a unique topic!
ReplyDelete:D Chess games and chess allusions are two things I love to discover in a book. And I needed something different for this week's TTT besides my favorite love stories which I've already done a couple of times.
DeleteWhat a great topic! My father used to play chess all the time. Who knew there were so many books that tie into that game. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteChess and books just seem to go together. ;D
DeleteQueen's Gambit -- what a fun TV series ! Like all the chess covers.
ReplyDeleteHaven't seen or read Queen's Gambit yet, but I want to do both.
DeleteOooo, I love your theme of CHESS this week!! I am a new chess enthusiast and have gotten into playing chess during the past year.
ReplyDeleteChess is so much fun! I love it even when I lose...which I often do. ;D
DeleteI feel the same way!! My husband has been my chess teacher and a much better player than myself.... But I have so much fun playing chess.
DeleteI'm not a chess player but I do love reading about chess. I enjoyed reading Check & Mate a lot and I hope you'll love it as much as I did.
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to reading it...I really liked Hazelwood's other books.
DeleteI read The Queen's Gambit, but not any of the others, except maybe Mystery Mile by Allingham. I think I have read all of her Albert Campion books up to The Beckoning Lady. Chess does show up in lots of books.
ReplyDeleteI like that it does. It's something that makes me glad. :D
