We do not read in order to turn great works of fiction into simplistic replicas of our own realities, we read for the pure, sensual, and unadulterated pleasure of reading.
Screens like that in paintings always make me wonder... is it hiding housework that didn't get done? Is the wall not painted in that spot? What's going on behind that screen??? LOL
I loved Azar Nafisi's first book. She is an astute reader. I had to look up the date of the painting b/c I wasn't sure the era but I think it's around 1876. Nice post.
Love the quote and the painting!

Now you've got me wondering what's behind that screen! Probably something undone...like dirty dishes, or unfolded laundry. ;D
DeleteI love that quote. and great art too!
ReplyDeleteMany readers get both of those things out of books! Nice painting.

ReplyDeleteSo true. Regine
ReplyDeleteLovely art. I quite agree with the quote. Sometimes reading is just reading, not an escape or trying to find the meaning of life.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day.
Oh I love the painting. It's hard to look comfortable in that dress but she looks so content!
