Top Ten Tuesday is a fun weekly meme hosted by Jana at That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week's theme is a Throwback Freebie where you choose a past Top Ten Tuesday topic to do. And I thought I would do my own take on Opening Lines.
So, here are my Top Ten Fun First Lines From Some Recent Reads:
"I was not born a monster."
(Her Radiant Curse by Elizabeth Lim)
"Addie Macrae's internal compass was irreparably damaged."
(Kilt Trip by Alexandra Kiley)
"What baffled them was the skeleton."
(This Wretched Valley by Jenny Kiefer)
"Madi Morgan had never been good with decisions, especially when it came to life or death situations. And cake was definitely life or death."
(Love On Camera by Dana LeCheminant)
"Boo couldn't think of a worse way to die."
(One Last Shot by Susan May Warren)
"My face is melting."
(Wild About You by Kaitlyn Hill)
"Cousin Edna Fairchild had designed her life on the principle that far fields were greener."
(The Chocolate Cobweb by Charlotte Armstrong)
"If there's one thing you should know about me, it's that I love a happy ending. That butterlies-in-your-stomach, rush-of-serotonin, breathless, euphoric, wrapped-up-in-a-bow happy ending."
(Only and Forever by Chloe Liese)
"Blood leaves no stain on a Warden's grey cloak."
(Proven Guilty by Jim Butcher)
"The fairy tales in Jen's imagination leaned toward the dark, Grimm variety, but in the real world, the worst monsters looked like everyone else."
(On Her Watch by Melinda Leigh)
Happy Reading!
Elizabeth Lim is the only author I recognize on your list, so there are some names for me to explore!
ReplyDeleteThe only one of these books I really didn't like was This Wretched Valley. But the rest are all really good imo.
DeleteThese are great first lines but the best one I think is the first and third one.
ReplyDeleteHave a lovely day
Those are good, aren't they?
DeleteThese are all great! I love anything from the Dresden Files world, but I think my favorite has to be about the cake!
ReplyDeleteThat turned out to be a very cute romance. But I'm with you on Harry Dresden! :D
DeleteThese were fun, Lark! Do you know I write down the first line of every book I read in my journal. Not sure how long ago I started that, but I continue to do it. I think at one point I wrote the last sentence as well, but I stopped that after a bit. I wonder how hard some of the authors work to make that first sentence 'grab' the reader? LOL
ReplyDeleteThat's cool that you have a journal of first lines like that. I'm trying to remember to jot down favorite first lines like these because I just might need them for another post like this sometime. ;D
DeleteGreat fun, all of those made me want to look the books up. I like, 'What baffled them was the skeleton '. 😂
ReplyDeleteThat is a great first line! I did not love that book however.
DeleteOoh, these are all great hooks.
ReplyDeleteThanks! And thanks for commenting. :D
DeleteI love the Bergman Brothers. I'm rereading the first and second ones to continue. Here is my post https://paigesofnovels.com/2024/07/09/top-ten-tuesday-anticipated-releases-for-the-second-half-of-2024-part-one/
ReplyDeleteI love the Bergman Brothers, too! Thanks for commenting. :D
DeleteI love quote posts. Thank you for stopping by earlier.
ReplyDeleteHi, Lydia! Thanks for always commenting on my TTT posts. :D
DeleteLove the Jim Butcher quote! I once went to a reading not long after Terry Goodkind's first book came out. One of his biggest issues was the opening line to Wizard's First Rule - he said it was weak and boring. LOL
ReplyDeleteHere is our Top Ten Tuesday. Thank you!
First lines do need to catch your attention that's for sure. Though I can't imagine Goodkind ever writing something weak and boring. :D
DeleteI enjoyed this post! I save all the first lines of the books I read throughout the year and post them at the end. Some are better than others, but I treasure them all.
ReplyDeleteSome are better than others. I'm trying to remember to write down my favs this year, so hopefully I can do more posts like this one. :D
DeleteI need to start saving these because I always love first lines! Then I completely forget them. Great list!! I love the Lim one!
ReplyDeleteI usually forget them, too. I'm trying to do a better job of writing some of the best ones down this year. :D
DeleteThese are good first lines. I like the internal compass one best. #2. That has me intrigued already.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that a great line? The book's a cute romance set in Scotland.
DeleteWow, those are some great first lines!! I love it when writers hook you in right away with lines that capture attention.
ReplyDeleteThe first line can sometimes make or break a book for me.
DeleteThis is great, so many epic beginnings! I need to start keeping track of some of the ones I love so I can do a post like this ;)
ReplyDeleteRight? I'm trying to do a better job of writing the really good first lines down this year because it does make for an easy blog post. ;D
DeleteThese are great! I especially love the one from This Wretched Valley. I'd probably be baffled by a skeleton too!
ReplyDeleteWho wouldn't be? ;D
DeleteThe Love on Camera made me laugh out loud. I'd definitely be hooked on that one.
ReplyDeleteThat was a sweet and funny romance that I really enjoyed.
DeleteWell, that quote from The Wretched Valley definitely leaves me with questions. LOL
ReplyDeleteIt's a great attention-grabbing first line, isn't it? :D
DeleteThese are such great first lines! This was fun! I loved that Susan May Warren story. What an attention-grabbing opener! :D
ReplyDeleteThat Susan May Warren book was such a fun read! I'm looking forward to reading the next one in that series. :D
DeleteWhat a great first line: "What baffled them was the skeleton."! I love the Charlotte Armstrong and Chloe Liese one, too. Great list, Lark! :)
