This week's theme is supposed to be BOOK COVERS IN THE COLORS OF MY COUNTRY'S FLAG.
But I changed it up a little. Since today is the Fourth of July here in America, I put together a list of Ten Books that Celebrate America's History, Heroes, and Freedoms. Because I love my country. And I loved all of these books, too.

Delete1776 is an excellent book, so interesting. S much better than anything I learned in Social Studies classes.

DeleteGreat list, Lark. Sort of inspired me to get back to reading history again. I kind of went into a funk about reading history books when the whole world started to rewrite history to suit themselves and no one much seemed to care they were doing it. Hopefully, we have gone a few steps past peak-absurdity now and will start acting like adults again at some point. What a world.
ReplyDeleteI know what you mean! I don't like how slanted some nonfiction books are these days. Or how everyone's so critical of the founding fathers. I tend to avoid those books, as you can see by the above list. :D
DeleteHooray for Charlie Brown! (The David McCullough was good, too...) I've been meaning to read the Matthew Pearl because I liked his novels, but haven't yet. A couple of those others look interesting, too

I found the Jemima Boone book very interesting, though some of the later chapters got a little bogged down in detail imo. But Daniel Boone led a pretty incredible life.

DeleteWhat a great selection! I have 1776 on my shelf and still need to read it -- I look forward to tackling it (soon, I hope!). My family tradition growing up was to watch the movie of the 1776 musical each 4th of July, and seeing the book here makes me think of that. Time to revive the old tradition, I think!

DeleteHappy Fourth of July, Lark and the Sam Adams book I would really like to read. An interesting founding father he doesn't get as much attention as he should. One young adult novel I read years ago that is a classic Johnny Tremain. It was amazing.
ReplyDeleteI loved the Sam Adams book! He did lead a very fascinating life. And I remember seeing Johnny Tremain when I was a kid, but I never read it. Maybe now I should. :D

DeleteWhat a great way to celebrate the 4th of July! As much as I enjoyed history in school, I don't really read a lot of nonfiction. This is a great list but I admit it's the Charlie Brown book that's calling my name the most! Love Peanuts :)
