"Bad things happen in the wilderness--and sometimes they're not accidents."
An abandoned glamping campsite near Precipice Lake in Sequoia National Park. Two missing campers. Who were they? And what happened to them? Park ranger Ferdinand "Hux" Huxley suspects foul play. But it's up to Special Agent Felicity Harland to investigate. But with no witnesses and sparse clues, it's not going to be easy to track down the truth.
What I liked best about this mystery:
- Getting to know Felicity and Hux. These two characters have interesting back stories, and they work well together. Hux is a former Navy Seal with a talent for finding people; Felicity is recovering from a devastating accident and travels with a cute dog named Ollie. I look forward to reading their next investigation.
- That beautiful National Park setting with its isolated wilderness, icy blue lakes, mountain peaks, and forested trails. It's always a favorite of mine.
My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Happy Reading!
Another favorite read by Claire Kells: Girl Underwater
It sounds like a good series and a mystery set in an isolated wilderness is a great setting. Plus I am curious about the job of a park ranger and what that entails.
ReplyDeleteI liked seeing these two team up for their investigation, and what fell to the park rangers and what was Harland's job as an agent with Investigative Services Bureau that apparently investigate crimes that happen in National Parks.
DeleteI like that the author gave both main characters good back stories. Sounds like a good start to the series!
ReplyDeleteI liked that they both had good back stories, too. It'll be interesting to see how that all plays out in upcoming books.
DeleteSounds like a good one. I definitely a need to check out this author. Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI think you would really like this one!
DeleteA mystery set in a national park sounds like a winner to me! Great review -- this sounds like something I should check out.
ReplyDeleteNational parks are such great settings for any kind of story, but especially mystery & suspense.
DeleteThese types of settings really add another layer to the mystery element don't they? It's not just a bad guy that's a threat but also nature and the environment! Sounds like a great read!
ReplyDeleteI love the part the remote wilderness plays in this one. It definitely added a great layer to the mystery imo. :D
DeleteThe vastness of the setting sounds like it adds an extra layer of suspense to this story! I've read a few non fiction works about this kind of environment and the trouble that can happen there.
ReplyDeleteTrail of the Lost and The Cold Vanish are two of my all-time favorite nonfiction books that are exactly about this kind of lost-in-the-wilderness mystery.
DeleteHappy reading. Regine
ReplyDeleteHi, Regine! :D
DeleteI like the setting. The mountains always appeal to me and the characters sound interesting!
ReplyDeleteThat mountain wilderness setting is one of my favorites. I've got the second book in this series on hold at my library, and I hope it's just as good as this one. I think it takes place up in Alaska.
DeleteOooh, sounds like a great read! I like national park settings as well.
ReplyDeleteI really liked this one! Kells has created two very likable characters, and I love that she takes you to some cool National parks along the way.
DeleteAbandoned glamping sight? That sounds interesting!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great set up for a mystery!
DeleteGetting lost while hiking or camping would be a nightmare.
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it? And it happens so often in real life. It's why I never hike or camp alone.
DeleteI enjoyed this one, too. Especially, the setting! I should see if she has another installment coming. :)
ReplyDeleteShe does! I have the second book on hold at my library and will be reading it soon. It's set in Alaska, I think. Which is another place I love reading about. :D
DeleteSounds like another winner!
ReplyDeleteIt's a really fast and fun read. And I do love that wilderness setting.
DeleteI love all these crime stories set in your NPs! Will look this one up.
ReplyDeleteI love them, too. And Harland and Hux and such likable characters. I can't wait to read the sequel and see which National Park they go to next.
DeleteWhat a great setting. It sounds like the perfect place for a mystery! I'll have to add this one to my wishlist. :)
ReplyDeleteI think you would really like this one. :D
DeleteHappy Friday. Regine

DeleteA wilderness thriller feels like the perfect summer read to me! I might check this one out.
ReplyDeleteThis is a good summer read...all that outdoor hiking and searching. Very fun.
DeleteSequoia National Park is so beautiful. I would want to read this just for the setting, but the mystery part sounds good too. I am glad you liked this one!
ReplyDeleteI really liked the setting! Made me want to go to Sequoia Nat'l Park and see it for myself. :D
DeleteThe setting sounds wonderful. There's been a lot of missing campers over the years in the news ... it's always a bit scare to hear.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people go missing in the wilderness every year...it freaks me out a little the ones that are never found. I always wonder what happened to them.
DeleteSounds suspenseful.
ReplyDeleteIt's got some good suspense in it, but more mystery than thriller.
DeleteI would enjoy the national park setting. I grabbed this one during an audiobook sale, but haven't listened just yet.
ReplyDeleteI hope you get a chance to listen to it...and that you enjoy it, too. :D
DeleteThis is great format for a brief review. I am going to have to get back to the Nevada Barr series set in national parks. And then check out Claire Kells' books.
ReplyDeleteI've read a few of those Nevada Barr books and enjoyed them, too.
DeleteI've enjoyed this series so far though I haven't read the most recent one. I love the national park setting!
ReplyDeleteI just checked the second one out of the library and I'm looking forward to reading it. :D
